(On managing her career): “I haven’t had a manager for about 20 years. I think if I did have a manager, it’d be a little more coherent. Because I fly by the seat of my pants, my career has that feeling to it.” (Rocky Mountain News, 1999) – Bette Midler

I’m probably the last of the entertainers.

“I’m probably the last of the entertainers. I’m the last one who sings and dances and tells jokes all in one show. So I shouldn’t crab. It’s what I chose to do and it’s what I enjoy doing. Everyone looks at me as a different kind of artist. I never really codified it; I never really said what it was, because I never really knew what it was. It was just me; I’m here all by myself.” (Rocky Mountain News, 1999) – Bette Midler

Well, it’s finally official: Disney is working on a Hocus Pocus TV movie. The bad news for Sanderson purists? The new project will include a new cast and new director.

The original Disney film—in which three fabulous witches played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy get resurrected in Salem—is a cult classic and an autumnal standby on Disney and Freeform. According to Deadline, the TV movie, currently in the early stages of development, will be a “reimagining” of the original; David Kirschner, a producer from the original, will executive produce, but Scarlett Lacey (The Royals) will replace original screenwriters Neil Cuthbert and Mick Garris, and original director Kenny Ortega will be absent as well. Hocus Pocus sequel may be in the works as a TV movie, according to screenwriter Mick Garris. The original film was first released in 1993, becoming a moderate success as a fun Halloween flick – but has since become a cult classic. The story of three witches brought back from the dead by a teen and his friends has only increased in popularity, with annual screenings in October in several theaters, events at Disney resorts, and even a full-length book about the film (released last year).
