Here, however, we’re paying homage to some of our favourite gay icons (and allies) over the age of 70. (Not that you’d know they were.)

Cher

71-year-old Cher looks more glam, fit and fabulous than the majority of us ever have. More importantly, however, she’s one of the gay community’s most vocal advocates. As well as playing a lesbian in the film Silkwood, and cameoing in Will & Grace as the idol of gay character Jack McFarland, Cher supported her son Chaz Bono’s gender transition. Comedians Pay Tribute to Jerry Lewis: “The French Were Right About Him All Along”
By Daniel Politi
AUG. 20 2017

Legendary comedian Jerry Lewis, known for his slapstick and, later in life, his philanthropy, died Sunday morning of natural causes. He was 91. With a career that spanned almost the entire length of his life, it didn’t take long for his fellow comedians to take to social media to mourn the loss of the man many described as an inspiration.

Penn Jillette wrote a series of tweets honoring the late comedian, emphasizing his larger-than-life persona and what he means to comedians everywhere. “We will miss Jerry so much,” Jillette wrote in one of his tweets. “I can’t believe I got to meet him and spend time with him.” Read More

Bette Midler:

Bette Midler: “Basically, what I was doing was a character that has always had a place in show business, and that’s the Broad. People always love a broad–someone with a sense of humor, someone with a fairly wicked tongue, someone who can belt out a song, someone who takes no guff. When I came up, there wasn’t anyone like that. The last one, I’d have to say, was Sophie Tucker.” — (Bette Midler in Entertainment Weekly, December 20, 1991.)

Bette Midler On Putting New Song Material In Shows:

Bette Midler On Putting New Song Material In Shows: “I’m nervous about putting new songs in, even though I have been working on them, I’m never even sure how much people know my old songs! I get a lot of new people because of my films — and I’m never sure how much of the material they know.” (Boston Globe, 1994)

The 136th U.S. Open is being held right now at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City through Sept. 11.

We love tennis (get it? — “love”?) because it’s kind of like politics. Volley, chop, counterpunch, and slam could all be moves Trey Gowdy uses against Hillary Clinton. And poaching, backhanded, double faults, and unforced errors all describe her response. Read More
