TOP 10: LOOKING FOR OSCAR GLORY AFTER 1991 (Bette Makes The List Twice)

Awards Circiut
TOP 10: LOOKING FOR OSCAR GLORY AFTER 1991
By Sam Coffey – Apr 4, 20180

ACCA 1991As voting continues in ACCA 1991, Awards Circuit celebrates the many great films of 1991, perhaps one of the most historic years in Oscar history.  A number of talented performers, directors, writers, and craftsmen were nominated (or won!) for their great achievements but have somehow not found their way back to the Dolby Theatre.  Mercifully, some actors who remained on this barren list for ages eventually found Oscar glory again, with Robert De Niro landing his first nomination since “Cape Fear” with “Silver Linings Playbook” and Laura Dern doing the same in 2014 with “Wild” following up her first nomination for “Rambling Rose.”  Unfortunately, too many winners and nominees from 1991 have passed away, failing to get back to Oscar since this year, including Jessica TandyJack Palance, cinematographer Adrian Biddle, and shockingly Jonathan Demme. Greatest films about female solidarity

Reader’s Digest
Greatest films about female solidarity
March 19, 2018

From Steel Magnolias to Frances Ha, these are our favourite films about female solidarity.

If there’s one thing that life can guarantee, it’s unpredictability. When life doesn’t appear to be going according to plan and nothing seems to be going as it should, one of the few things you can be certain of is that your fellow women are going to be there with you no matter what. This rings true for Aurore (Agnès Jaoui), in I Got Life! – a timely and uplifting film celebrating womanhood which arrives in UK cinemas on March 23rd. Read More

LOS ANGELES — Can a performer win the Oscar when a co-star is nominated for the same movie? The issue will be tested at the March 30 Academy Awards, for which Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis were both nominated as best actress for “Thelma & Louise.”

“Thelma & Louise,” in which two women enjoy a law-breaking spree through the West, proved the sleeper of 1991.

The best actress nominees:

DAVIS AND SARANDON played free-hearted women intent on a payback for the indignities they suffered at the hands of men in Ridley Scott‘s “Thelma & Louise.” Read More

Alternate Oscars: Best Actress, 1992 – Nominate Bette Midler Again

Every Day Should Be Saturday
Alternate Oscars: Best Actress, 1992
by TexaninNYC on Apr 11, 2012 12:43 PM EDT

We’ve debated many a time about what movies should have won in their respective years, and while we all disagree (cause that’s what the commetariat does best (looking at you, Nick)), there is a basic consensus that the Academy rates just above the BCS in consistently getting it right. I think I’ve finally come up with a system to best nominate and vote for our official EDSBS Oscars, which will be held legally binding in any arguments about movies that come up about movies in the future. Mister D: Duh!

PANTSUIT LOOK. What’s the look of the moment? The pantsuit. Just look at what Bette Midler, Geena Davis, Jodie Foster, Juliette Lewis, Laura Dern and Barbra Streisand wore to a recent luncheon for Oscar nominees. All of the ladies in waiting wore some form of a man-tailored suit, either double-breasted adorned with a tie or fedora, or a single-breasted number, simply enhanced with a soft silk blouse or T-shirt.

The pantsuit is being touted by designers as the look for spring. But even if you disregard the hype, the pant suit provides a lot of practical wardrobe options. Read More
