BetteBack October 24, 1996: Marc Shaiman Writes Special Lyrics For Bette Midler For Fire And Ice Ball

“I hope this isn’t presumptuous of me … I’ve learned that if I don’t toot my own horn, no one else will!” So writes two-time Oscar-winning film composer and comedy writer Marc Shaiman in a note we received here last Friday.

Shaiman recently scored the super-hit “The First Wives Club” — and he wrote special lyrics (to the tune of “Everything’s Coming Up
Roses”) for his “First Wives” star Bette Midler to sing at the Hollywood Fire & Ice Ball. It ends with: “Everything’s gonna be tabloids and tummy tucks!” Read More

It’s getting time for the Kennedy Center Honors announcement. (Last year it was on July 15th.) It could come any time in the next month. So who should be considered?

First of all, the Eagles will get their award from last year. They postponed from last year because Glenn Frey fell ill, and then died. So that will be emotional. Read More

At long last, Bette Midler has set up her pet project “Texas Guinan” at Universal Pictures, with Martin Scorsese attached to direct and David Henry Hwang (“M. Butterfly“) to write the movie.

The project will be developed from “Texas Guinan: Queen of the Nightclubs” by Louise Berliner, whose grandfather was Guinan’s attorney during her notorious 1929 public nuisance trial. Her grandfather, it should be noted, got his client acquitted. Read More

On July 1, 2014, The Tracking Board reported that Tina Fey (30 Rock, SNL) and her production company, Little Stranger, were producing an untitled sequel to 1993’s Hocus Pocus, which starred Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. However, they weren’t sure if she would star in it or not.

A day later, Variety threw a bit of cold water on that report. According to them, Fey was working with Disney on a “movie that is centered around witchcraft but is unrelated to the Bette Midler laffer.” Even a rep for Fey put out statement dismissing The Tracking Board’s story: “Their report is not accurate — Tina is not developing a sequel to ‘Hocus Pocus.’” Read More

Alternate Oscars: Best Actress, 1992 – Nominate Bette Midler Again

Every Day Should Be Saturday
Alternate Oscars: Best Actress, 1992
by TexaninNYC on Apr 11, 2012 12:43 PM EDT

We’ve debated many a time about what movies should have won in their respective years, and while we all disagree (cause that’s what the commetariat does best (looking at you, Nick)), there is a basic consensus that the Academy rates just above the BCS in consistently getting it right. I think I’ve finally come up with a system to best nominate and vote for our official EDSBS Oscars, which will be held legally binding in any arguments about movies that come up about movies in the future. BetteBack April 8, 1992: The Pantsuit

Mister D: Duh!

Syracuse Herald Journal

PANTSUIT LOOK. What’s the look of the moment? The pantsuit. Just look at what Bette Midler, Geena Davis, Jodie Foster, Juliette Lewis, Laura Dern and Barbra Streisand wore to a recent luncheon for Oscar nominees. All of the ladies in waiting wore some form of a man-tailored suit, either double-breasted adorned with a tie or fedora, or a single-breasted number, simply enhanced with a soft silk blouse or T-shirt.

The pantsuit is being touted by designers as the look for spring. But even if you disregard the hype, the pant suit provides a lot of practical wardrobe options. Read More
