Audio: Bette Midler – FOR FREE – Unreleased Studio Recording

Mister D: This song was written by one of Bette’s inspirations, Ms. Joni Mitchell. I believe it was recorded for The Divine Miss M album, but did not make the cut, unfortunately.

I slept last night in a good hotel
I went shopping today for jewels
The wind rushed around in the dirty town
And the children let out from the schools
I was standing on a noisy corner
Waiting for the walking green
Across the street he stood
And he played real good

This article originally appeared in the June 1995 issue of OUT.

It’s the sort of daydream around which Jill Sobule might fashion one of her whimsical songs: she was hanging around her house in Los Angeles, in her pajamas, when a talent scout who had acquired her demo tape purely by accident called to invite her to perform at the Atlantic Records office the next day. Two days later, he called again—from an airplane— to tell Sobule she was as good as signed. All this as a result of “demos that my previous manager, who dropped me, said were ‘Terrible! You’re never gonna get anywhere!’” Read More

Stunner Sophie Von Haselberg allowed me to explore her rather extensive cosmetic collection. I was fascinated. Not only does Sophie bare a striking resemblance to her mom, Bette Midler, but she is also vivacious, talented and funny. Check all the beauty and blue scoop here, including her recipe for a DIY body scrub and the meaning of “hot lids”!

Q. What’s your favorite movie or song with “blue” in the title? Read More

BetteBack June 23, 1974: The Resurgence Of The Female Singer

In the last two or three years, women singers have begun to have hit records again, following a period dominated by British and American male rock groups.

Some well-known examples of this resurgence are Bette Midler, Helen Reddy, Joni Mitchell, Cher, and Anne Murray.

Now another woman has a gold album. She is Maria Muldaur, who has been on tour across the southern U.S. from San Diego to Atlanta lately.

In addition, her hit single, “Midnight at the Oasis,” has been near the top on both “easy-listening” and rock charts, and a second album is scheduled for release in August, according to Reprise Records. Read More

It is no news to most people that Bette Midler, the five-foot-high selfannounced queen of the truly tacky people, has come out with her second album. What may surprise those people who are not followers of the Divine Miss M though, is how fine this album really is.

Last year when Bette came to Dallas in concert, not many straights had heard about her. The audience looked at least 50 per cent gay and at least 35 per cent more camp. A person committed a definite faux pas if he arrived in jeans. Read More

BetteBack April 25, 1995: Old message, new bottle

‘WAKE up, it’s a beautiful morning.” The happy message is sung in a sweet, a cappella Beach Boys harmony. Then, in kick the drums and brass.

Wake up, it’s a beautiful morning in 1966. But then again, it isn’t.

It’s 1995, a year in which the horrors just keep coming, from Tel Aviv to Tokyo to Oklahoma City. And, oddly enough, the Boo Radleys‘ wildly derivative and determinedly retro Wake Up (NMC) may turn out to be one of the year’s definitive albums, providing good times around the world. Read More
