Broadway Box Office: “Hello, Dolly!” Without Bette Midler Falls to Earth

Deadline
Broadway B.O.: ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ Glides As ‘Hello, Dolly!’ Slides On Winter’s Icy Road
by Jeremy Gerard
January 29, 2018 2:02pm

Broadway’s winter lull focuses all eyes on the slim pickings as long-runs host 2-for-1 sales, houses sit empty in anticipation of the spring semester and shows hustle to sustain momentum after stars have exited for the ski slopes or warmer climes.

Tony winner Ben Platt has left Dear Evan Hansen, but that musical, with Noah Galvin taking over in the title role, still is drawing a premium of nearly 20% above its gross potential at the Shubert Organization’s Music Box Theatre, with one of the highest per-ticket averages on the Street. Broadway B.O. Leaps Even As ‘Lion King’ & ‘Wicked’ Feel Winter Chill

Deadline Hollywood
Broadway B.O. Leaps Even As ‘Lion King’ & ‘Wicked’ Feel Winter Chill

January 16, 2018 2:06pm

With the three-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend as a spur, the Broadway box office defied the January trend, pole-vaulting 27% over the same week in 2017 and even surpassing the previous week by 2%. All that despite some staggering nose-dives among the family-friendly crowd.

That includes Disney’s two shows: The Lion King was off $681K from the previous week at the Nederlander Organization’s Minskoff Theatre, while Aladdin, installed at the Mouse’s New Amsterdam flagship, skidded nearly a quarter-million dollars. It wasn’t a great week for Andrew Lloyd Webber, either: The Phantom of the Opera, tagging the 30-year mark at the Shubert Organization’s Majestic Theatre, fell a chandelier-swinging $371K, while School of Rock, at the Shuberts’ Winter Garden, was off $193K. Wicked, at the Nederlanders’ Gershwin, was off $280K from the week before. Read More

Hello, Dolly!
Why it’s on our list: The ultimate musical theatre showstopper, “Put On Your Sunday Clothes.”
While leading lady Bette Midler was the definitive draw for this revival, the stand-out song for this Dolly, or any Dolly for that matter, isn’t “Before the Parade Passes By”—time and again it comes down to “Put On Your Sunday Clothes.” Jerry Herman’s score is a joyous concoction crafted simply to delight and enthrall audiences, and it kicks into high gear with this first act production number. Story About Taylor Swift Refusing To “Get Involved” With Pink, Bette Midler,Kim Kardashian Feud Is Made-Up

2017-10-23_0-56-59

Tickets to Bruce Springsteen’s sold-out Broadway debut are going for over $1,700 on StubHub. At the box office, a premium ticket to “Hello, Dolly!” with Bette Midler or “Hamilton” can go for as much as $998 at select performances.

“The bad news of course is that fans of limited means are shut out of these shows unless they plan to re-mortgage their homes,” said Roma Torre, anchor and theater critic on NY1. “There are lotteries for cheaper same-day tickets, but the odds of winning a pair of those seats aren’t much better than a lightning strike outside the theater.” Read More

1. The celebrated Bay Area string ensemble Kronos Quartet has made some kick-ass collaborations with other musical artists over the years, but their new album “Ladilikan,” a creation with the Malian group Trio Da Kali, is certainly one of their best.

Da Kali is a trio that brings contemporary edge to traditional Malian music, blending a balafon (xylophone), a bass ngoni (flute) and a vocalist. The Kronos, consisting of violinists David Harrington and John Sherba, violist Hank Dutt and cellist Sunny Yang , are no strangers to world music. Da Kali singer Hawa Diabate is the daughter of Mali’s great traditional singer Kasse Mady Diabate . Kronos leader Harrington compares her voice to that of the late American gospel legend Mahalia Jackson . Composer Jacob Garchik , son of SF Chronicle columnist Leah Garchik, arranged Trio Da Kali’s repertoire for string quartet. Read More
