TOP 10: LOOKING FOR OSCAR GLORY AFTER 1991
By Sam Coffey – Apr 4, 20180

ACCA 1991As voting continues in ACCA 1991, Awards Circuit celebrates the many great films of 1991, perhaps one of the most historic years in Oscar history.  A number of talented performers, directors, writers, and craftsmen were nominated (or won!) for their great achievements but have somehow not found their way back to the Dolby Theatre.  Mercifully, some actors who remained on this barren list for ages eventually found Oscar glory again, with Robert De Niro landing his first nomination since “Cape Fear” with “Silver Linings Playbook” and Laura Dern doing the same in 2014 with “Wild” following up her first nomination for “Rambling Rose.”  Unfortunately, too many winners and nominees from 1991 have passed away, failing to get back to Oscar since this year, including Jessica TandyJack Palance, cinematographer Adrian Biddle, and shockingly Jonathan Demme. Mister D: Last I heard it was called “acting.” No one is obligated to bring their roots into everything they do!

Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, New Movies and Noses: A Sitcom Writer’s Jew Review (Guest Column)

A former writer on “Frasier” and “Will & Grace,” Janis Hirsch kvells and kvetches about “The Guilt Trip” and “Parental Guidance.”

The first recorded nose job was performed circa 500 B.C. by an ayurvedic physician in India. It took the next 1,400 years for nose jobs to be embraced by Jewish women. But in the 1970s came a seismic shift. The number of girls lining up for Grace Kelly‘s honker on their Bubbe Esther’s face started decreasing. I have one theory why: In 1968, Columbia opened Funny Girl, starring Barbra Streisand. Four years later, Atlantic Records released Bette Midler’s debut album, The Divine Miss M. For me and millions of Jewish girls, Barbra and Bette turned the conventional notion of beauty on its blue-eyed, blond head. I was the New Jersey chapter president of the Barbra Streisand Fan Club — but I wanted to hang out with bawdy Bette. (Disclosure: I worked on her ill-fated CBS show in 2001. I’ve had car accidents that were more fun, but she made amends and the bloom is back on The Rose.) Now we have Barbra and Bette movies opening within days of each other; I had to see both. Read More

BetteBack March 18, 1992: Bette Midler Attends The Academy Awards Nominees’ Luncheon

Daily Globe

March 18, 1992

Nick Nolte, nominated for an Oscar for “The Prince of Tides,” says he likes fellow nominee Robin Williams’ idea for how to choose the winner: “We should all get in the pool and swim for it.”

Nolte and a host of other stars turned out Tuesday for the Academy Awards nominees’ luncheon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Previous years have seen sparse turnouts, but half of this year’s nominees attended, including Warren Beatty, Geena Davis, Laura Dern, Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Diane Ladd, Michael Lerner, Juliette Lewis, Bette Midler and Barbra Streisand. Read More

BetteBack January 4, 1992: Women Of The Year

The Indiana Gazette
Scoop
January 4, 1992
by Liz Smith

“THERE’S A great woman behind every idiot,” said John Lennon.

For the past several years, I’ve devoted the first column of the New Year to female stars who have dominated the media, and this column in particular, by virtue of controversy, success or scandal – or all three combined.

Annette Bentng – The superwoman of the year! She is the one who finally “caught” Warren Beatty. (They are not married as of this writing, but she is about to bear his child, which is more than hundreds of her predecessors can claim.) When the news broke that Bening – a beautiful, intelligent woman and a fascinating actress — was carrying Beatty’s baby and that she and Warren were awaiting the stork together, the re-action was like nothing ever seen in Hollywood. Jaded Tinseltowners were literally mute with shock. And how nice that Mama and Papa are currently appearing in one of the best movies of the year, “Bugsy” — sure to be up for multiple Oscars. BetteBack November 26, 1991: For These Entertainers Are The Holidays Naughty Or Nice?

Syracuse Post Standard
Holidays may not be so merry for these entertainers
November 26, 1991

Holidays may not be so merry for these entertainers. Here’s who is under the gun in Hollywood these days, according to Hollywood insiders:

• Bruce Willis — “Hudson Hawk” bombed, “Mortal Thoughts” went unheeded, and the onetime TV idol is still held partly responsible for “The Bonfire of the Vanities.” Will “The Last Boy Scout” give him something to smirk about? Read More
