Alien reminds Hurt of one of his favourite Bette Midler jokes, her riff about the scene in which the nascent alien burst out of his chest and scurried out of the room in the space ship: “Did you see that thing that came out of John Hurt’s stomach?” Hurt says, quoting Midler. “It ran across the death table like a penis on a skateboard screaming, ‘Mommy!’ all the way.”
