As popular music moved toward rock and soul in the early 1970s, Bette Midler–who had come to New York from Hawaii in 1965–emerged from the steam of the gay Continental Baths on Broadway and 74th Street to remind us that there was still room for heart.

She remains so attached to the city that in 1995 she founded the New York Restoration Project, which helps keep our neighborhoods nice and green.
