A GOOD Cup of Joe

Bette Midler burros into the heart of Las Vegas

Wednesday night in Las Vegas, New York’s favorite brassy diva, Bette Midler, launched her newest extravaganza, “The Showgirl Must Go,” with boas, bawdiness and one loco burro, which she rode in on.

Midler’s 90-minute production fills the massive stage of the Colosseum in Caesar’s Palace – built for Celine Dion – shimmering scenic effects, a chorus line of 20 tail-flipping mermaids and Midler’s own one-of-a-kind voice and star power.

The show begins with a “Wizard of Oz”-like tornado that tears through the desert and down the Vegas Strip to Caesar’s.

On Wednesday night the place was packed with nearly 4,300 people – die-hard fans, friends and celebs like Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel, Joey Fatone, Angela Bassett, Robin Leach and Jennifer Coolidge.

“Showgirl” follows the formula of the Divine Miss M’s previous productions: A mix of naughty jokes, big dance numbers and her signature songs and characters (wheelchair-bound mermaid Dolores Delago and the salty joke-teller Soph). What makes this Midler show special is that it supposedly cost $10 million and is scheduled to run for two years.

I’m not much of a gambler, but this show looks pretty much like a sure Bette. In Friday’s Daily News, I’ll tell you all about it.

  2. Glad you found me too….you make me sound good. Plus we all want to see you in some of those naughty panties! 🙂 Which type of girl are you? ALOHA!!! Divine!!!! Or Harlette!!!!? Aloha sounds like a hoo ha welcoming committee…LOL

  3. Hey Mr D & All!

Don! Sorry it has been so long since I last left a message for you. Things are going crazy in Sydney as we are gearing up for the 30th Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade & Party next weekend.

All sorts of wonderful camp and gay things happening all over Sydney at the moment, Cyndi Lauper & Olivia Newton John are performing at the party, Margret Cho is also doing shows in other venues.

Queens are getting tanned, buffed, plucked and stuffed for the occasion. Dykes are ….. well they are doing what Dykes do, in Australia that usually means spit polishing the spokes on their Harley Davidson or letting their armpit hair grow! And yes as usual, our shores have been graced with the presence of our fellow queer folk who visit us from other lands, all speaking in foreign tongue and all eager to give us Aussies a bit of their foreign tongue and all are fascinated with the fact that we actually use 3 ply toilet paper here in Australia, yes, we have upgraded since last year when all we had was sand paper and John Howard (our former Prime Minister) to wipe our asses with!

But needless to say, consumer spending has risen by a staggering 80% in Sydney, despite the current interest rate rises and issues we have had over the past 2 months, yes and I am pleased to inform you that the sales of “Crab & Body Lice Shampoo” have taken a rise during the Mardi Gras season. Heaven forbid anyone who needs an emergency comb out on the night!

Oh, shit! This is meant to be about Bette right?

All I can say is, I wish Australia wasn’t so fucking far way from the rest of the world. I really wish I was able to get to Vegas on a regular basis to see Bette’s show. Though I am not one to complain **cheese** I can say I am grateful to Bette for bringing “Kiss My Brass” to Australia and finally making a dream come true for me to see the Divine One on stage.

This is Bette’s time to shine, and that she will for the next 2 years. This is a true professional showing taking the reigns and showing the rest how it should be done. This is going to be the show that will raise the standards of how all other shows will be perceived in Vegas from now on. And if halfway through the season Bette decides to chance the name of the show, I would like to make a suggestion, “This DIVA will go on!”

    Big Hugz!

    Manny, Sydney Australia
