RALEIGH, N.C. – Filmmaker Mark Rydell hopes to help students at the University of North Carolina avoid some of the problems he had breaking into the business when he teaches classes at the Chapel Hill campus.
Rydell directed “On Golden Pond” starring Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda and Katharine Hepburn and “The Rose,” starring Bette Midler. He’s returning to Chapel Hill for a second time to participate in classes such as master screenwriting, where he’ll offer his critique.
But Rydell said in a telephone interview Monday that he also hopes to advise students on how to survive in the tough world that is Hollywood and how to make connections that get them past the agents and publicists and to the actors, producers and directors.
Rydell begins teaching Wednesday as a visiting professor and finishes April 2.
