Bette Cancels 30th Anniversary Screening Of “The Rose”

Actors Barry Primus and Doris Roberts and Oscar®-nominated sound mixers Jim Webb and Theodore Soderberg will join director Mark Rydell in the onstage discussion following the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 30th anniversary screening of “The Rose” on Friday, September 25, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Los Angeles Times film critic Betsy Sharkey will host the evening. Oscar-nominated actress Bette Midler was originally scheduled to participate in the event, but has had to cancel for personal reasons. Instead, she will provide a special video message dedicated to the cast, crew and fans of the film.

Primus played the role of Dennis and Roberts played Rose’s mother in the 1979 film, which garnered four Academy Award® nominations. Webb and Soderberg were nominated in the Sound category, with Douglas Williams and Paul Wells.

Tickets for “The Rose” are sold out. A standby line will form on the day of the event, and standby numbers will be assigned at approximately 5:30 p.m. Any available tickets will be distributed shortly before the program begins. Tickets are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. All seating is unreserved. The Samuel Goldwyn Theater is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. For more information, call (310) 247-3600 or visit www.oscars.org.

  1. I just read this info on google, and thought of you, Don. I hope that you are still able to enjoy your trip, and try to make the most out of it.

    1. Thank you Missy. So far it looks like I’m still going….it’s my favorite movie of all time…plus I wrote Bette’s asst and told her Bette owes me a freebie visit next time I go see her in something….LOL

  2. Something told me, as I was logging on tonight, that Bette was going to cancel. I’m so sorry for everyone who is spending so much money to fly across the country for this event. I will cancel my hotel reservation, save the gas money and keep my ticket in my Bette Scrapbook. I was so looking forward to this night, but without Bette there I can’t see spending the money. I hope everyone going has a wonderful, fun and safe time.

  3. I suppose so, but if it’s something really personal then maybe she just doesn’t want to do it….I already have everything booked and can’t cancel, so I’ll just have to make the best of the situation. At least I get some free time off…. LOL

  4. Boy, I`m sooooo sorry about all the people who were planning to go. Specially you, Don, you know…But honest to God, I even said this to Don in one of our emails, (excuse me) but if I was Bette I wouldn`t be there. LOL! I have no clue why she canceled, who the hell knows, but I certainly wouldn`t want to see myself on the big screen, 30 years later and then have to sit in fron of people and talk about the whole experience. I bet she can`t enjoy the movie the same way we do…can you imagine all the memories that is brings to her? Man, I don`t know what kind of emotions that would bring to me…and then expose yourself to an audience? NO WAY! And we all know how special The Rose it so her…anyways, it might be any other reason…In any case, it`s her life, right? 😛
And Don, not only do you deserve a freebie and a dinner at her Vegas suite, just like KAthy Griffin. LOL!
