Streisand Releases “I Think It’s Going To Rain Today” (Thanks Marcos)

Mister D: Streisand just released her version of “I Think It’s Going To Rain Today” and it’s like buttah, but as far as capturing the essence and mood of the song, Bette Midler‘s wins hands down for me. I have to say that I really can be more objective than people give me credit for and I will give credit when credit is due. On this everything should have gelled with Streisand’s vocal and original writer of the song, Randy Newman‘s simple arrangement, but what’s missing here is “soul,” as if Ms. Streisand was more concerned with hitting the notes just precisely and overlooking the meaning of the song. I still am looking forward to Streisand’s CD, “Release Me.” I know some people will ask, “why compare?” And my answer is “you can’t help but not.” But I also think what people like is always “subjective” so one is gonna like what they’re gonna like. Nobody can ever force me to ever like Britney Spears!

As a thank you for being Barbra’s most loyal fans, here is the world premiere of her performance of Randy Newman’s “I Think It’s Going To Rain Today” from her upcoming album Release Me. The track was recorded in 1971 during the Stoney End sessions and features Randy Newman accompanying Barbra’s striking vocals on the piano. Release Me will be available on vinyl on September 25 and CD and MP3 download on October 9. Click here to pre-order this stunning collection of music from Barbra’s private vault now.

  1. Very stale feeling. Not much feeling and emotion! Bette Midler’s version from “Beaches” was more powerful and sheer emotion! <3 Bette!

  2. I agree with you completely, Mr. D.
Soul is somethng Babs just doesn’t have: what she does have, is an icy perfection and that extraordinary voice.
We saw Babs on both her UK tours – the comeback one in the 90s and the more recent one: she was clear, perfect, exact, in both shows, but didn’t really appear to be enjoying herself, or singing the songs, they were like exam pieces. We saw Bette in Vegas: she inhabited the songs, and sang them like she meant them: thinking about her singing ‘When A man..’ still gives me goosebumps…

  3. 1971 with only a pianist Barbra Streisand did more than just show up.
She didn’t sit around doing heroin or planning three somes with shop owners.
Bette had till 1979 eight additional years then even more years to record this number. I enjoyed the community garden today…
