BETTE ESQ.: Bette Midler – on nationwide tour to promote her autobiography, “View From a Broad” – set a new record for writer’s cramp Tuesday in Los Angeles. She scribbled steadily for six hours, autographing 1,500 books for her fans.

Bookstore owner Lew Lengfeld says the old record was Herb Caen‘s 1,100.

Bette showed up for the party In a hat consisting of a globe with an orbiting airplane, and it caught the eye of a little girl in the crowd.

“Why,” she demanded, “do you have an airplane on your head?” Quipped Bette, “to make you laugh – and so people will ask me, ‘What’s that airplane doing on your head?'” The little girl giggled and Bette went right on scribbling.
