Feud-rumor update: Christmas 1991 was supposed to be a duel to the box-office death between Bette Midler and Barbra Streisand. But “For the Boys” lost badly to “Prince of Tides” — and “Prince” was no blockbuster. The Oscar voters may have salved Midler’s feelings by nominating her for best actress while snubbing Streisand in acting and directing categories alike. Meanwhile, Disney is said to be developing a Midler-Streisand vehicle called “Diary of a Mad Playwright,” based on James Kirkwood’s book about difficult Broadway stars Carol Channing and Mary Martin. Sounds shticky to me
