  1. I have always wanted to hear Bette sing this song! I am so glad we have it!! Thank you for sharing and a thank you to the music gods for listening to this request and to marc shaiman of course!!

  2. I went to one of the first ever AIDS benefit concerts in nyc in the mid 1980s at Lincoln Center. My friends and I sat in the last row of the balcony. Bette was the last performer, after something like 3 hours. She sang Friends Nd The Rose and told some Sophie Tucker jokes. She finished with a monologue about living above Marie’s Crisis and settling into bed with a guy and then hearing “I had a dream…” from the boys at the bar. As only Bette can do, she brought this tired crowd from laughter to tears, finishing with this song as a tribute to her lost friends. It was unbelievable. I’ve sen her dozens of times over 5 decades in concert, on Broadway and at benefits. That performance was remarkable — a true standout. Thanks for posting this. Love you Mister D.

    1. Thank you so much for describing those moments. I can’t imagine all the emotions that went swirling around that room. It still brings a tear to my eye everytime I see that one clip we do have. Xx
