Bette Midler Sings Several Songs At The Ahmet Ertegun Tribute

Bette Midler sings “Beyond the Sea”, segueing into Tom Waits’ “Shiver Me Timbers”. She also sings the naughtily humorous “Princess Poo-Poo-Ly Has Plenty Papaya” This performance is from an Ahmet Ertegun tribute held on April 17th, 2007, at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Ahmet took me under his wing. I think he was madly in love with my stage character. The character I had been on stage was a balls-to-the-wall kind of broad, and he loved that because it was a throwback to his youth when he was watching vaudeville theater and burlesque.

He was like Pan or something, like this bacchanalian kind of a character. In this buttoned-down world of ours, he just had a ball. The thing about him was he loved the game, and he loved the fun, but at the bottom of it was the music. He was as passionate about music as any human being alive. He lived hard, and I think that the curiosity to hear another sound, to hear another song, to hear those chords played a different way, I think that’s what kept him going.

        1. Got your message. I guess congrats, but I know how hard this is nonetheless. Glad you and Marina are okay. I finally got Covid, but I’m okay, Cannot say it’s been pleasant. I had a moment of lucidity and got my laptop working, although Barry sent me a new one. So I felt good enough to post some stuff last night. But I’m just unable to get a break as far as health is concerned here. This lasted hit had me scared for a night or two bc no matter what I did, I just couldn’t get enough oxygen, so I just made myself calm down and just go with a very fast, labored breathing flow. I couldn’t even see to test, and I couldn’t read letters off the TV. I just wanted to hear girls screaming in horror movies.

  1. Thank you for posting the wonderful video of Bette singing “Beyond the Sea” and “Shiver Me Timbers”, just beautiful! SMT is my all-time favorite song, and this is a lovely version. I previously read about the tribute show and so happy I could see her performance. I don’t stop by this site much and glad I did today! Don, thank you and I’m sorry to read about your troubles. 🙂
