Mister D: They make it seem as if Bette was turned down…my guess and intuition tells me she may have been approached but had no interest. From what I gather she is not a big fan of Andrew Lloyd Weber…i think she would find his stuff quite trite…at least, I do:-)
Legendary actress and singer Liza Minnelli is set to star in a movie version of musical Sunset Boulevard.
British theater impresario Andrew Lloyd-Webber has been in talks with the diva to take the role of faded idol Norma Desmond.
And the Cabaret star has beaten off stiff competition from several grande-dames of the Hollywood scene for the meaty role – Funny Girl Barbra Streisand reportedly knocked herself out of the race by demanding total artistic control.
Other mooted big names in the running had included Glenn Close and Bette Midler.
And the musical is set to feature a galaxy of Hollywood A-listers, Ted & Sylvia star Gwyneth Paltrow, The Life of David Gale actress Kate Winslet and Love, Actually siren Martine McCutcheon, have all been mentioned in connection with the project.
Minnelli has staged a career resuscitation in recent times, with a star-studded marriage to producer David Gest and a “Liza’s Back!” tour.
