Watch a movie: One you want to watch (Friday, January 24, 2003)
It’s Super Bowl Sunday—your significant other has already claimed the living room television and his buddies have come to roost on every available space in the room—you have no choice, but to either watch the gridiron spectacular or find a quiet sanctuary in your bedroom.
My choice is the bedroom.
I have a VCR in my bedroom so I plan to lay claim to my king-size bed as my throne for the day and enjoy a few movies that my husband likes to call “chick flicks.”
If you don’t have a VCR in your bedroom, don’t worry. Just tell your partner that you’ll leave him and his cronies alone if he moves the VCR to the bedroom. Quickly explain that he can do all this prior to the start of the game, the pre-game, the pre-pre-game and even the morning commentary on ESPN. With all of that, he might as well get up at 7 and move the VCR or he could do it tonight before he goes to bed.
Here are a few suggestions on movies you might want to pick up tonight at the video store. These are my Top 10 Super Bowl-Avoiding Videos for 2003.
10. Moulin Rouge—A great musical. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor shine in this 2001 Oscar-nominated flick. Be sure to check out the CanCan scene early in the movie. Be sure to listen for the Nirvana song “Smells Like Teen Spirit,”
9. Ocean’s Eleven—Another 2001 flick. Directed by Steven Soderbergh—ala Erin Brockovich and Traffic and starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Scott Caan, Casey Affleck, Matt Damon and Bernie Mac—‘nuff said.
8. Grease—is the word. Take a step back in time with this 1978 musical starring Olivia Newton John, John Travolta and West Wing’s Stockard Channing.
7. When Harry Met Sally—Who can forget the now notorious scene involving Meg Ryan and her faking—um—something. This 1989 hit also stars Billy Crystal.
6. Pretty Woman—A 1990 hit which was the breakout movie for Julia Roberts. Also starring Richard Gere. This is one of the only movies ever made that makes women wish that, just for once, they were a prostitute just for a couple of moments.
5. Hope Floats—This movie is what my husband calls the epitome of a chick flick. Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr. (NBC’s Will & Grace) take us on a romantic journey of finding new love with an old friend in this 1998 flick.
4. Steel Magnolias—A 1989 classic starring Olympia Dukakis, Shirley MacClaine, Sally Field, Dolly Parton and Julia Roberts. Dylan McDermott and Tom Skerritt help bring up the masculine quotient in this tearjerker. My favorite line of the movie is from Julia Roberts’ character Shelby—“My colors are blush and bashful—two very different shades of pink.”
3. Jerry Maguire—Who couldn’t help but fall in love with Tom Cruise in this 1996 hit? Renee Zellweger also stars in the movie that won Cuba Gooding Jr. an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. With quotes like, “Show me the money,” and “You complete me,” this romantic comedy will hit the perfect spot—plus it has an athletic tie, as the title character is a beleagured sports agent.
2. Bridget Jones’s Diary—a 2001 hit starring Renee Zellweger. Zellweger hits the mark with this British heroine. She was nominated for an Oscar last year for her portrayal of the 30-something spinster. The movie also stars Hugh Grant and Colin Firth—yummy.
1. The number 1 movie to watch Super Bowl Sunday is the tearjerker Beaches starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey. The 1988 story follows two friends C.C. (Midler) and Hillary (Hershey) as their friendship develops over 30 years. Make sure you have the tissues handy—this one will get you.
