Having been married to artist Martin von Haselberg for 30 years, she boasts one of the longest unions in Hollywood.
But during an appearance on Good Morning Britain, Bette Midler, 69, revealed that she and her husband endured a rocky patch, until they agreed to make a real go of things for the sake of their daughter Sophie, now 28.
In a pre-recorded clip, which was aired on Monday morning, the veteran singer was asked by her interviewer on the ITV show how she managed to maintain such longevity in her relationship.
The star responded: ‘We never see each other! No, he really is the wind beneath my wings, he has looked after me for many, many years, he’s sacrificed a lot.
‘We used to fight bitterly, we came to the conclusion that we wanted to raise a child, we wanted to raise a really wonderful child, we never wanted to hurt that kid in any way and we stayed together until it got better, and it did get better and it was really fascinating.
‘And both of us, we both look back and we just like wipe our brows and say, “What the hell was that?”‘
The Wind Beneath My Wings singer also told host Susanna Reid that she was proud of her and Martin’s relationship because it is the ‘oldest marriage in Hollywood’.
She added: ‘It’s like a thousand years in dog years. Our marriage is the oldest marriage in Hollywood.’
Last week, Bette marked her 69th birthday by taking to Twitter to ask for Ariana Grande‘s forgiveness after she criticised the singer’s scantily-clad performances.
She wrote: ‘Yes, it’s my birthday! And my birthday wish is that @ArianaGrande forgives me soon and let’s me direct her next video…’
The row began when Bette hit out at Ariana’s sexy music videos, insisting the Bang Bang hitmaker’s provocative videos and stage performances are ‘ridiculous’ and ‘silly beyond belief’ in an interview with The Telegraph.
She added: ‘It’s terrible! It’s always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, slithering around on a couch, looking so ridiculous.
‘I mean, it’s silly beyond belief and I don’t know who’s telling her to do it. I wish they’d stop.’
The singer hit back on Twitter that shortly afterwards, citing Bette as ‘a feminist who stood for women being able to do whatever the F they wanted without judgement’.
She added: ‘Not sure where that Bette went but I want that sexy mermaid back!! Always a fan no matter what my love.’
Ariana also made sure to include a picture of Bette scantily clad in a bikini and pearls which she captioned: ‘All love here’.
