Venting her sartorial frustrations just after the Dior show in Paris last fall, and lamenting that reality might be playing too little a role in this summer’s fashion offerings, the endearingly blunt Bette Midler told me, “what’s with those short skirts with no panties? I can’t wear that!” Still, if you’ve got the legs — and the nerve — for them, minis are this season’s must-haves. The spirited skirts, and an easy, carefree approach to hot weather dressing in general, are all part of the current fashion zeitgeist. Times may be tough, uncertain and even sinister, but when in doubt, escape, baby, escape.

“Fashion is always supposed to make a man or a woman feel good, regardless of the economy, politics, whatever is going on in the world. Fashion should never make you feel depressed. Otherwise, what’s the point?” Backstage in New York, Calvin Klein was justifying all the romance and sensuality he’d dished out on his summer runway, with sheer, easy, little chiffon and jersey dresses in creamy ivory and pale pastel shades. Gwyneth Paltrow and Sandra Bullock watched from the front row and seemed to approve.
