Mel Gibson, once considered the sexiest man alive, is now helping to restore the sexiest man not alive. Gibson, Sting, Bette Midler, Franco Zeffirelli and other tony types are all members of the Friends of Florence foundation, which is financing the cleaning of Michelangelo’s “David.” Although a very public row over how to clean it has erupted between the head of the Galleria dell’Accademia, where the statue stands, and Agnese Parronchi, the veteran restorer originally tapped to buff up the statue, Friends of Florence head Contessa Simonetta Brandolini isn’t deterred. “I think that’s all smoothed over now,” she says–no pun intended.
