Goodnight Irene

Goodnight Irene
(Gussie Davis)

Tid-Bettes: After bringing in the New Year with two sold out shows at Park West in 1977, Bette went to the Earle Of Oldtown club in Chicago to see her friend Steve Goodman perform.  During the final song of that show Steve got Bette to come up on stage and sing this classic song with him.

Last Saturday night I got married
Oh, me and my man settled down
Now me and my man, we are parted
Yes, we’re parted
Gonna take another stroll downtown

Irene goodnight
Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene
Goodnight Irene
I’ll see you in my dreams

Now sometimes I live in the country
Yeah, and sometimes you know I live in the town
Sometimes I take a great notion
Just to jump in the river and drown

Irene goodnight
Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene
Goodnight Irene
I’ll see you in my dreams

Well I know that Bette
Worked two sets tonight
And the ten nights that went before
But it was so sweet of her
To come up here and sing with us
And welcome this New Years once more

Happy, happy, happy, happy

Irene goodnight
Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene
Goodnight Irene
I’ll see you in my dreams
In my dreams
