It Should Have Been Me
(Norman Whitfield, William Stevenson)
I saw my love walking down the aisle
And as he passed me by
He turned to me and gave me a smile
Then the preacher, oh yes
The preacher joined their hands
And all the people, all the people
All the people began to stand
When I stood up and screamed
It should have been me
It should have been me, yeah
I jumped out of my seat and screamed
It should have been me
How could you do this to me, yeah
We made a promise that we’d never part
And then you turned around
And you broke, you broke my heart
Now you’re standing there saying I do
Holding hands with somebody new
Well you know that
It should have been me
It should have been me, yeah
You know and I know
It should have been me
How could you do this to me baby
How could you do this
You know there are two things in this life that I can not stand. One of them is a liar. The other is wasting my money. So try to imagine just how pissed off I was when I discovered I was wasting my money on a liar. I did everything for that man. I swept the floor under his feet and I kissed the ground he walked on. And what did it get me? An invitation to his wedding, to another girl. I could have spit nails. But I decided I would go to his wedding. I would swallow my pride, just like I had swallowed everything else that came before me. So I went to his wedding, and I took my seat in my pew wearing my best afternoon lamé. And I watched as she walked down the aisle, dripping in Bois Des Iles, draping sea pearls and baby’s breath in her wake. And I held my tong, because I was determined that no matter how much pain I was about to endure, I was going to keep my big mouth shut.
Then the preacher, oh yeah
The preacher said let there be silence, please
If there is any objections to this wedding
Speak now, or forever
Forever hold your peace
And I stood up and screamed
It should have been me
It should have been me
I jumped out of my seat and screamed
It should have been me
It should have been me
He’s blowing my mind
People believe me
That man was mine
It should have been me
It should have been me
It should have been me
I jumped out of my seat and screamed
It should have been me
It should have been me
Somebody call the police
That woman up there’s a dog-gone thief
It should have been me
