Song Analysis: The Power With and Without Music in Newman’s “I Think It’s Going to Rain”
April 11, 2018
I think power lies in this poem/song with and without music. However, the addition of music certainly strikes more emotion. Many understand the message is one of grief because of the music, but if you asked them for specifics they can’t place them. I believe that with close examination of Newman’s choice of title, the words, imagery and metaphors, one will understand its powerful message as well.

Mister D: There’s a small Bette mention in this article, but I just found this all very interesting. Thought maybe some of you would too!
If you’ve ever found yourself intrigued by the meltdowns of Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen, puzzled by Jennifer Aniston’s seemingly endless difficulty in finding romantic bliss, fascinated by the endless woes of the even more endless “Real Housewives,†or hungry for any scrap of news about Brangelina, Kimye or TomKat, chances are you are deeply familiar with the work of Liz Smith and Jess Cagle, who have 90 years of gossip columns and entertainment news between them.

JOHNNY CARSON: THE MAN WHO RETIRED
Now that Letterman is calling it quits, a look back at the king of late night in 2002
By Bill Zehme on April 3, 2014
Carson, in case you wondered, has since watched the tape more than once-he reviews every Tonight Show video marketed to the public-and, each time, feels the same emotions rear up. Mention Bette Midler to him even now and his countenance glows: “Well, she is remarkable.” Of the spontaneous combustion attendant, he has said, “You couldn’t re-create it, ever.” Privately, he considers it the most magical hour of his televised life. Indeed, the truth is, he wanted to end his career that very night and forego the ultimate farewell show. In aftermath, his brain trust of producers, all nearly as spent as he was, descended to his dressing room and half-jokingly declared, “We can’t come back tomorrow and follow that!” He fixed them with a look that meant business and said, “You’re right. Let’s not come back at all. Let’s just not even come back.”

NEW DUO: The latest celebrity twosome is sort of interesting. I hear that actor Robert De Niro, who likes to stay out of the limelight, has discovered Bette Midler who loves the glare of the celebrity spotlight. The pair are inseparable and certainly do make an unusual combination.

For forty years the HFPA has audio-taped celebrated actors and actresses. The world’s largest collection of its kind is now in the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences Library. The audios are fascinating. To veteran stars, our HFPA journalists are family; they banter with them and speak openly and frankly about themselves and their artistry.
Few people wake up one morning and find they’re Famous; most wake up and find they’re late for work. Then there are those who, for whatever reasons, attract the attention of local television. They think they’re famous when, in fact, it’s just a slow day for hard news.
