I ALREADY told you to go see “Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me” on Broad way, in which the character Jiminy Glick makes a hilarious rotund appearance as he nightly pulls celebrities onstage for interviews.
Marty as Jiminy has already featured Jerry Seinfeld, Dennis Miller, Nathan Lane, Rosie O’Donnell, Tim Allen and Regis Philbin. So the other night he had none other than the Divine Miss Midler. Bette hasn’t been on the Broadway stage since she was in the original production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” But she has known Marty, the show’s co-writer Marc Shaiman and the director Scott Wittman for years.
When Bette got up out of the audience, she received a standing ovation before even saying a word. The Jiminy interview lasted twice as long as usual. The audience literally refused to let her leave the stage. When the cast asked the audience for donations to benefit B’way Cares, Marc Shaiman asked Bette to give them a song. She was reluctant but finally did after asking for generous donations. She brought the house down with “The Rose.” It was one of those great “only in New York” theater moments! Equity Fights AIDS went home much richer.
