Ann Wilson Covers ‘You Don’t Own Me’ On Her Latest Album, ‘Immortal’
WRITTEN BY PAUL HAGEN
FEBRUARY 14, 2019

Mister D: I used to put up audio of other artists singing the same songs that Bette Midler recorded or sang in concert. Some were better than her version, but really I can only think of maybe two or three where I liked another artists version over hers. (See, I can be objective!) Sometimes other versions were so bad you just got a kick out of it. Some were funny. Some versions were so different that they were interesting. I liked finding the original versions just to see how Bette made it her own. I’m going to do this because I enjoy it, but I hope some of you will, too, You might find a new or old artist that you’ve never heard and become a new fan of theirs.
This Ann Wilson cover of “You Don’t Own Me” is given quite a different arrangement than the original version by Leslie Gore. And it’s very different than Midler’s. Hawn’s, and Keaton’s uplifting version that Marc Shaiman arranged. Bette and the Girl’s version is still my favorite, but I’m a big fan of Heart and I liked how Ann Wison shook it up a little to fit her style.
But music really is so subjective. If you’d like to make any comments on what you think, it might be fun to hear how others feel about the music.

Audio: Cheryl Dilcher, Special Songs, Bette Sings Background Vocals, Her First Known Recording – 1971
Cheryl Dilcher – Special Songs -1970
Mister D: As far as I know this is the first recording Bette Midler ever did. She was the background vocalist on about 4 songs. The artist was Cheryl Dilcher. I read that she’s folk, and another record was metal. Anyway, Hope you all enjoy!
Accompanying herself on six and twelve string acoustic guitar, Cheryl Dilcher produced three albums of her poetic tunes between 1970 and 1977. Unfortunately, she arose on the scene at a time when the popularity of acoustic music was at a lull. Although her first two albums – Butterfly in 1973 and Magic, the following year – were released on A&M, neither sold and her contract was not renewed. She fared no better with

Audio Auction: Bette Midler LIVE 1972 NYC club concert reel-to-reel tape unheard ONE-OF-A-KIND! (Take A Listen)

From Wild Honey Records: Click Here
Check out the
Hiding in an unmarked tape box for over 40 years, here we have an entire, never-before-heard 1972 performance by Bette Midler! This in-house stereo recording was made by Continental Baths deejay Don Fendley in early 1972 (most likely on January 15th).
This 77-minute show was recorded straight through (no edits or interruptions) using at least two onstage microphones, which were likely fed into the DJ booth.
This is Miss M. captured during one of The Baths’ famed Saturday night cabaret shows — and as this historic recording documents, she keeps the audience right in the palm of her hand! Bette proudly introduces her excellent backing band (Michael Federal, Kevin Ellman, Lee Gurst and Barry Manilow), teases club owner Steve Ostrow and praises The Baths toward the end of the show. The evening concludes with a final announcement by the MC: “We ask that the ladies — as soon as they can get themselves together — please leave and we can turn The Baths back to us boys and then we’ll have our disco!” ...

Audio: Bette Midler – Steal Away Again – Written By Bette Midler, Carole Bayer Sager, and Bruce Roberts (Demo)

Steal Away Again
(Carole Bayer Sager/Bruce Roberts/Bette Midler)
Baby won't you come and take me by my hand
Won't you come and take me for a ride
We almost got to Disneyland one night
It was abandoned in the light
And then the wind blew in Whisperin"
Some folks are not meant to win
Tell me how would you like it
Say would you like it
Close your eyes and maybe we could roll away again
Tell me how would you like it
Say would you like it
If you and I were crazy we would
Steal away again
Baby won't you come and take me to the sea
Well find ourselves a ship that is heaven bound
We almost sailed away one pearly dawn
But in the light of early morning
Ooo the wind blew in Whisperin
Some folks ore not meant to win
Tell, me how would you like it
Say would you like it
Close your eyes and maybe we could roll away again
How would you like it
Say would you like it
If you and I were dumb enough
We would steal away again ...
