April 30, 2004 — WHEN Bette Midler (above) found out her sister, Susan, needed a kidney last year, she sprang into action. “She was not a match, so she went on a nationwide hunt for a donor,” an inside source said. Trying to make light of the issue, Bette told pals: “I’d give her mine, but then there goes the cash cow of the family!” Thankfully, their brother Daniel turned out to be a perfect match. “The surgery was successful,” Midler’s rep told PAGE SIX

Mama Jo said there’d be days like this. There’d be days like this, Mama Jo said. (With no apologies to The Shirelles.)
Jo McKenzie, a gubernatorial aide and executive director of the Governor’s Residence, popularly and affectionately known as “Mama Jo,” has been repeatedly maligned lately for being – of all things, God forbid – “flamboyant.”

Today someone sent me the text that they typed out for the More interview back in November 2003. I know a lot of you were not privy to that and had wanted to read it…
Anyway, I have a nice Canadian friend that I hear from every once in awhile (are Canadians all nice like this? Darrell, Chef Bev, David, Paul…who knew?)…well, my friend, David (FP) enjoyed the W article so much that MacCaire typed up…well he was kind enough to type the More article up…and, no, I didn’t have to ask!!!

Cardinal Egan has confirmed that Sen. John Kerry’s abortion stance has endangered his chances of attending the 59th Alfred E. Smith Dinner in October.
We told you on Monday that organizers were weighing whether to bar the pro-choice Democrat from the feast, which drew both Gov. George W. Bush and Vice President Al Gore in 2000.
Archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling says he’s spoken to the cardinal, who is in Rome. “He said the question of inviting John Kerry has come up,” Zwilling tells us. “There have been discussions. But there’s no resolution about who will be invited.”

Bette Midler, who stars in the upcoming remake of “The Stepford Wives,” is content with the simple things in life — so content that she may be quitting show business soon.
“I love things people take for granted: food, flowers, being in a room with fun people — that’s the stuff I love,” the actress-singer told Scripps Howard News Service. “The rest of it’s kind of a grind, I gotta say.
“I’m supposed to retire shortly. I don’t want to fall off the stage and have people say, ‘She waited too long.’ “

Teran has been a big Bette fan for about half her life, she says, but decided to re-read (?) Mark Bego’s old bio on Bette from 1987, entitiled, Outrageously Divine.
Well, my dears, if you turn to page 16 of the above mentioned book, you’ll find a discussion of Bette’s newfound success with Disney films and her brand new little daughter, Sophie. Okay…well get to the point, Mister D!!!!
Anyhoo, Mr. Bego mentions that Bette has recently said she’d be settling down, and his response to this is…GASP!!!!:

Weeks after The Stepford Wives remake was test-screened, its crew and power cast – Nicole Kidman, Bette Midler,Matthew Broderick, and Christopher Walken – are headed back for “additional scenes,” as the studio calls them. The latest turmoil for the June 11 film comes after the $90 million Frank Oz-directed pic ran two months behind schedule. Oz, the voice of Yoda and Miss Piggy (top that on your resume!), wants Kidman for three days of reshoots, though she’s working on Sydney Pollack’s The Interpreter in her native Australia. “Frank’s sense of detail can just be insane,” says one set spy. “He’s used to puppets.” Aren’t we all?

Thanks for the photo Nicola!
WENT TO lunch in Michael’s in a grand sextet laid on by media maven Joe Armstrong. We were – Elton John, fresh from his Rainforest triumphal fund-raiser (over $2 million); his producer-partner David Furnish, who runs Rocket Films in London; the divine Miss M, Bette Midler herself, fresh from her own successful tour and ready to tackle all of New York’s parks and garbage (with your help); and the lovely Candice Bergen, who will emcee the New York Women’s Foundation breakfast on May 6 at the New York Hilton.
