Video Included: Interesting Take On This Song: Grace – You Don’t Own Me ft. G-Eazy

Mister D: I used to have a jukebox where I played other artist’s covering the same songs Bette had. Some were the originals, by the songwriters, or just by different bands and vocalists with different interpretations. Some were great, mediocre, and just God-awful. But I loved hearing them. I may start bringing that back. Anyway, I liked this version. It’s very original and much darker than other versions I’ve heard.

Eminem Recalls Near Death Experience As He Raps Over Bette Midler’s The Rose (Powerful Video Included)

People Eminem Recalls Near Death Experience As He Raps Over Bette Midler’s The Rose (Powerful Video Included) KAREN MIZOGUCHI April 24, 2018 12:35 PM Eminem celebrated 10 years of sober living on Saturday ahead of his big Coachella performance. And the milestone is quite the landmark for the rapper, who has openly detailed his dark past with drug abuse in his music. Most recently, the father of three opened up even more about his near-fatal overdose in 2007 on Revival, his ninth studio album that was released this past December. On the 18th track, titled “Castle” featuring Skylar Grey, Eminem — born Marshall Mathers — writes letters to his 21-year-old daughter Hailie Jade, with the third verse talking about her 12th birthday and recalling how he overdosed on methadone and nearly died. “Your dad’s at the end of his rope/ I’m sliding down a slippery slope/ Anyway, sweetie, I better go, I’m getting sleepy … Love, Dad, s—, I don’t know,” he raps. Then on the 19th and final track of Revival, titled “Arose,” Eminem continues the narrative of “Castle” by speaking directly to his daughter again, this time as final apologies from his deathbed. “Arose” begins with a sample of “The Rose,” the song from Bette Midler‘s 1979 album and film of the same name. Four minutes into his song, Eminem says, “To rewrite a mistake, I’m rewinding the tape,” referencing every drug he’s taken and the realization that he might not make it out of the hospital. From here, he starts his apology, “Just heard they’re unplugging me/ And it’s your birthday/ Jade I’m missing your birthday/ Baby girl, I’m sorry,” before the song stops and the third verse of “Castle” plays again. However, the end of the verse is noticeably different: “I’m pledging to throw this methadone in the toilet” he says referring to a new beginning followed by the sound of a toilet flushing. All in all, it’s Eminem’s family, including his two adopted daughters Alaina Marie and Whitney Scott, that helped him pull through his addiction. “Consider the last four minutes as the song I’d have sent to my daughters if I’d have made it to the hospital less than two hours later,” he says. “But I fought it.” Want to keep up on the latest from PEOPLE? In 2011, Eminem revealed he had a near-death experience from an accidental overdose back in 2007 after his addiction got so bad that he was taking up to 20 pills a day. “I used to get pills wherever I could,” he told the New York Times. “I was just taking anything that anybody was giving to me.”

I have dabbled in this, dabbled in that

“I have dabbled in this, dabbled in that. I’m easily distracted but focused. Once I decide what I’m going to do I’m like a dog with a bone. I can’t let it go until it’s done, and it’s done well.” – Bette Midler Image may contain: 1 person, smiling

Audio: Bette Midler THE CARIOCA -Tribute (Memorial) To Director, Choreographer Joe Layton -1995.mp3

“It’s forties Xavier Cugat,” director Joe Layton whispers. “It’s overproduced and terrible. And,” he hastens to add, “hopefully, terribly funny.” – Layton talking about The Carioca during an interview about Clams On The Half Shell

LA Times Pop Music Review : Midler, Others Pay Tribute to Joe LaytonApril 08, 1995|DON HECKMAN

The imposing, wide-ranging lineup of L.A. Shanti’s “Tribute to Joe Layton” on Thursday at the Wiltern Theater–from Bette Midler to Carol Burnett to Melissa Etheridge–probably would have pleased the honoree, a highly regarded choreographer and director who died last year at the age of 64. But he probably would have been even more delighted that a group of energetic dancers nearly stole the show with an excerpt (re-created by Gene Castle) from his choreography for “Barnum”–though annoyed by the fact that their identities were buried in the fine print of the “Special Thanks” part of the program. The evening also included a presentation of the Daniel P. Warner Founder’s Award to singer Etheridge for her support of Shanti’s various services for people affected by HIV, AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses. Despite the honor, Etheridge only performed two numbers, most notably a strong, dark-toned rendering of her Grammy-winning “Come to My Window.” It would have been nice to have heard more. Among other featured artists, Burnett, Marilynn Lovell Matz and the vocal group the Tonics made brief appearances. Debbie Shapiro-Gravitte used her advanced state of pregnancy to have fun with “Lulu’s Back in Town.” Joel Grey offered some stirring song and dance from Layton’s Tony-winning choreography for “George M.” And Melissa Manchester, with one of the most gorgeous voices in mainstream pop, verged unnecessarily close to Whitney Houston-esque shouting an otherwise impressive “Come In From the Rain.” Bruce Vilanch, hosting the event, provided the right tone of inside humor, and Ellen DeGeneres presented Etheridge’s award with characteristically wacky irreverence. Closing her headliner segment of the show, Midler’s tribute of “Happiness Is Just a Thing Called Joe” and “Wind Beneath My Wings” was both tender and heartfelt, a fitting conclusion to a well-produced evening.
