Bette Midler, BP celebrate Arbor Day here

On April 28, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. joined award winning actress Bette Midler and MillionTreesNYC, a public-private partnership between New York Restoration Project (NYRP) and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, to celebrate Arbor Day by planting more than 100 trees in the Bronx. In partnership with the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), corporate volunteers from MillionTreesNYC, BNP Paribas, Toyota, 5th grade students from NYRP’s RespecTree education program and local NYCHA residents planted trees at the NYCHA Justice Sonia Sotomayor Houses in the Bronx. New York City Ballet’s premieres an all-new production of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s The Seven Deadly Sins. Directed and choreographed by Lynne Taylor-Corbett, it stars Wendy Whelan alongside Tony-winning Broadway veteran Patti LuPone.


“This is really a room full of women in charge, which is bizarre in ballet,” says Wendy Whelan. “We have a woman pianist, a ballet mistress, two women lead characters and a woman choreographer- director. It’s wild!” Read More

Today, the producers of PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT THE MUSICAL announced that there will be a US tour for PRISCILLA starting in the Fall of 2012. The first city and starting date will be announced shortly.

Following hit productions in Australia, London and Toronto, PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT THE MUSICAL opened on March 20 at the Palace Theatre (1564 Broadway).

The highest grossing new musical that has opened on Broadway this season also topped another chart when the Original Cast Recording of PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT THE MUSICALdebuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Cast Album Chart. Read More

Bette is an amazing woman who is making a difference. Through her leadership of the New York Restoration Project (NYRP) and with the help of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, the goal is for one million new trees to be planted and cared for across NYC’s five boroughs by 2017.

Today Bette was at the with 5th grade students from NYRP’s RespecTree education program. They were joined by employees of BNP Paribas and Toyota (sponsors). We caught up with them as they were planting trees. Take a look at our video. Read More

Novelist Iris Rainer Dart‘s current Broadway debut as a librettist and lyricist of the musical The People in the Picture is a warm-up to the writer’s next show — a musical version of her bestselling novel “Beaches,” a property better known as a hit film starring Bette Midler.

Dart told that she’s writing the lyrics and co-writing the libretto for Beaches, the musical, which will draw from her novel rather than the screenplay of the 1988 movie (which altered some elements of the 1985 book). Read More
