(When you were growing up, did you ever steal anything?) “I had no money. I had absolutely nothing. I got a quarter a week for allowance. What are you going to do with a quarter a week? So, my girlfriend said, “This is what I do.” So I said I’d do it with her. But I didn’t really like it. It was too terrifying. It hurt my nerves. I stopped, and I’ve never stolen anything since. I would never, ever think of it. After my girlfriend and I took this makeup–lipsticks and hair dye–from the mall, we were on our way home with our little bags. It was pouring rain, we were in the middle of a hurricane, and my girlfriend and I got down on our knees and said, “God, if you don’t kill us in this hurricane we swear we will never do this again.” We didn’t die, and we never did it again. I keep my vows.” (1991, Movieline) – Bette Midler
Bette Midler Takes Another Week Off From “Hello Dolly!”
by Roger Friedman – September 5, 2017 10:53 am
Goodbye, Dolly, once again.
Starting tomorrow Bette Midler takes her second full week off from “Hello, Dolly!” The first back at the beginning of July.
Midler has also set her closing date for “Dolly!” as January 14, 2018. That should be the end of the run unless they can find someone to come in and take over. That’s unlikely.
The “Hello, Dolly!” cash grab is one of the most onerous in the history of Broadway. Tickets were priced well above $500-$700. Midler is likely taking home $100,000 a week or more. And she hasn’t performed matinees and missed other performances.
Bernadette Peters, the much-loved and much-honored star of Broadway musical theater, will succeed Bette Midler in the title role of “Hello, Dolly!,” the show’s lead producer, Scott Rudin, said Tuesday.
Victor Garber will join Ms. Peters, playing the man she fancies, Horace Vandergelder. That role is currently played by David Hyde Pierce.
Both performers will join the production on Jan. 20. Ms. Midler and Mr. Hyde Pierce will play their final performances Jan. 14, after which the show will be dark for a few days.
