First Wives Club Surges On Streaming Charts After Diane Keaton’s Passing

The world mourned the sad passing of Diane Keaton last weekend, with many honoring her on social media, and others returning to her films on streaming. Several of the movies she has starred in over the decades, many of which are all-time classics, have witnessed spikes in viewership. While The Godfather and Something’s Gotta Give remained favorites, other films that Keaton starred in also drew attention. Among the most popular was The First Wives Club, the comedy blockbuster that she did back in 1996.

According to FlixPatrol, The First Wives Club was the 10th-most-watched movie on the domestic iTunes charts on October 12. The leader board was topped by the recent blockbusters The Conjuring: Last Rites, Weapons, and F1. In fact, The First Wives Club beat recent releases such as The Bad Guys 2 and HIM. It also placed a couple of spots above another Keaton classic, Something’s Gotta Give, which featured Jack Nicholson and grossed over $260 million worldwide, a number that would be nearly unthinkable for a film of its kind today.

But Keaton delivered numerous box office hits in the third act of her career. The First Wives Club is one of them. Directed by Hugh Wilson and co-starring Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn, the movie made over $180 million globally against a reported budget of $26 million. It featured the three older stars joining hands to exact vengeance against their former spouses, after realizing that they’ve been taken for granted all their lives. The film received mixed reviews — it holds a 49% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes — but has always been a fan-favorite.

A winner of an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and two Golden Globes, Keaton died at the age of 79 on October 11. She’s best remembered for her collaborations with rom-com legend Nancy Meyers and the disgraced director Woody Allen, and for starring in classics such as The Godfather and Reds. Keaton experienced box office success till the very end of her career; in 2018, she starred in Book Club, which grossed over $100 million worldwide. Her last release was the comedy film Summer Camp, which debuted last year.
