I Just Love…..

Which dress, pantsuit, and or costume is your favorite of Bette’s? I know this is hard, so you can at least pick 2 or 3.

  • For me the images that came to mind for me were the dress she wore at the Grammy Awards where she sang “From A Distance.” It was a long, black dress with a fishtail type train at the bottom.
  • The second image that came to me was that tacky, tight, white dress with polka dots on it that she wore in Divine Madness. Showed a lot of boobies!!! LOL Anyway, I loved how it looked on her.

You can play along or not. Just thought I’d let you know what was on my mind…..

Love, Mister D

  1. I love the last dress she wore in The Rose, she was awful skinny then and it hung off her but it was beautiful and i also love the dress she wore for the Divine Miss Millenium Tour too, the one on the cover of Bathhouse Betty. i would love to get my little hands on them ones 😀

  2. My alltime fav Bette outfit is the one she had on at her “my knight in black leather” performance. the red leather jacket, the b/w-striped sweater and purple panties on that sparkling babyblue tights.

My second fav is the white Vicky Eydie/Cher Show dress.

I love the red dress from the rolling stone aniversary, her stepford wives premiere skirt/shirt and what she wore at the latest leno show where she sang WAMLAW – I call it the “leno-blouse”. I think she also looks amazing in everything that includes a fishtail and there’s so many more…

did I mention the Hot-Dog yet?

  3. The only one that came to mind for me was when Bette presented the best new artist award in the dress that she said she took from Cher. I thought that was beautiful. XOXO

  4. Lol I LOVE her Delores outfits! My favs are the one from DLV (light greenish) and the current bright pink sparkly one in Showgirl. I also love her flowy orange one dress she wears when she sings “From a Distance” in Showgirl.

  5. Okay, so now I can explain…Here ya go – the gold dress is from an Al Gore fundraiser at Radio City in 2000 – absolutely stunning. I actually wrote in to InStyle that year when they were highlighting celeb FAB dresses and I couldn’t believe they missed our Miss M in this little getup. Well, they agreed w/me and actually posted my letter AND the pic – HA! I still have the page, I should send it to ya Mr D 😉
The 2nd, we all know is from KMB. I just loved the way Bette moved in this dress, it complimented everything there is about her (especially the “Sophie” on her arm) .
Lately, everything she wears looks Divine!!

  6. 1st: I thought she looked fabulous in that pink pant suit she wore to the premiere of That Old Feeling. She did not have a blouse under the jacket, and that gave it a really sexy look to the whole thing. Oh, and she looks good in pink.

2: I loved that outfit she wore to the 2004 Hulaween Ball. I thought it was a cute and fun look for a Halloween coustume, and she looked stunning in it. And whatever that was on her head…only she could pull that off.

Those are a few of my favorites anyways.

  7. Hey Don, my dear!! 🙂
Im sorry to have to do this, but I have to correct you. I have that performance of From a Distance from the Grammys on tape and it looks like the dress is a very deep purple. or at least the way the lights bounced off of it made it look purple. But I LOVE that dress also, she looked so beautiful in it. One of my Fave gowns was the “V” stripped silver and black gown she wore in her Vanity Fair layout from 1991 entitled “Belle le Bette” and the green cocktail dress she wore in FOR THE BOYS during the Christmas scene. absolutely gorgeous! I also think that the sunflower/XOXO dress she wore as Johnny Carson’s last dress was a HOOT! lol “I was the last one out of Fredrick’s of Hollywood before they torched it!” lol
The black , jersey Pam Dennis dress she wore a couple of times and had redone then auctioned off was beautiful! ( the one she wore to present on the 1996 Oscars with Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton)
Ok I think That is all I have at the moment, lol 🙂 LOVE this thread Mr. D!!! and Love you!! Talk to you soon! 😀
    ANDY

  8. No problem at all Andy. I’m color blind so I can easily mistake one color for another…LOL It just looked black to me….Hope you are doing well…

    Love, Don

  9. Here’s another “little number’ to think about …
How about the BEAUTIFUL dress Bette wore in Diva Las Vegas when singing SWM ???
She almost bounced herself right out of that gorgeous dress!

  10. 1. All time favorite, Mondo Beyondo

    2. Pop that collar girl! Loved Sadie Shelton.

    3. The biggest “train” wreck in history! (-;

  11. Okay Katrin,
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the dress from The Rose (she wore in the pay phone box)!!!! My alltime fav- I want to have it!
Did you mean that, Katrin? Hehe ;o)
And the “Leno-blouse” is really simple and beautiful. And it is also the “Strictly Come Dancing-blouse”, The “Ellen-blouse” and “Not Madonna-blouse”, isn’t it?

  12. Cris: I was sitting in the car in a traffic jam and I started thinking about Bette clothes…

Karen: I can tell you like blouses, now!

Jack: And…I wishI had picked Jack’s first pick. I loved that dress….

Thanks again for all the participation. I love reading these, but it makes me change my mind too much!

  13. My fave outfit would be eather the TO DESERVE YOU dress, the CAPITAL ONE dress or the leggins and red top she wore on the today show LOVE EM

  14. Definitely the pink corset in “Showgirl”. That’s friggin’ awesome. And her corset at the end of “Ol Red Hair Is Back”. What can I say, I dig the corsets!

  15. Hello, Everybody!

I always loved the flair-waisted pantsuits that she had made in gold and blue. (The blue one was worn in “That Old Feeling” and the gold one that she wore to everything but the opening of a bag.) It’s a great silhouette for her. She notoriously “frugal” and doesn’t mind treating her closet like the “Repeat Boutique”. The Cloony leather jacket made more rounds than an ice cream truck. I’ve seen the Leno blouse about fifty times, and the Bathhouse Betty dress (which I also adore) was originally worn when she co-hosted the MTV Awards…and then again when singing on the American Music Awards (One Monkey) years later…then in the video for “One True Friend” and then in the Millennium Tour…

The KMB tattoo dress was hot, I loved the b&w polka dot dress from Big Business, and I agree that the Grammy “From a Distance” gown was dreamy. I really loved the white and black dress with the red pumps after the Otto Titzling number in Beaches. But (and mind you that this opinion is coming from a drag queen) her Winifred Sanderson costume was unbelievable. Now, I’m not even suggesting that she was attractive in it or anything (the snow plow teeth and erased eyebrows didn’t help) but the costume itself is simply remarkable. I’ve attempted to construct it in earnest three times and can’t ever see myself going through that much labor (and money) again.

Great topic and thanks for all of the hard work, Mr. B.!!! Me loves you all!

    The Divine Grace

  16. Thank you Miss Divine Grace! I never was sure until you brought it up, but I kind of thought she “used” clothes in a frugal manner. Everything always reminded me of something else she wore…LOL

    Love, D

  17. I agree with Divine Grace…I love the blue and gold pant suits that she rocked out during the time around “That Old Feeling.” I even had a blue one just like hers, so I felt super special…haha.

I, too, love the ‘tattoo dress’ but also love the big, tacky 80’s sweaters in Outrageous Fortune and Ruthless People. Classic.

  18. OMG DEFINITELY THE TASSEL DRESS FROM DIVINE MADNESS “I tickled myself” that shit is AMAZING – I would kill to wear it.

  19. i like the tassel dress from divine madness too! it was so nice! if it didn’t have a tassel, i would wear it even 🙂

  20. I think the silver dress on the back of the Bette Midler album is the best. There was a picture of her in that dress posted on “Beete on the Boards” — a live performance, not sure from where. Also love some of the other dresses from her early days, especially the show at the Palace.

  21. Jamie, I have to agree with the top and bottom dresses that you’ve chosen! The tattoo dress abd the cream colored spider web look are absolutely my favs and thought it was amazing that you had the same ones pictured! Miss you, hon! It’s been toooo long!
