Stepford Wives and Film Reception

Combine Bette Midler, Jon Lovitz, Christopher Walken, and Nicole Kidman in a movie and it is almost a guaranteed hit. This remake, however, did have some glaring errors as rewriting and re-filming occurred. It blends star power with a risky premise.

One error is hard to overlook and detracts from the film quality: not all characters are robots. Yet a character can produce a huge pile of money after a debit card goes into their mouth. This mix of surprises raises questions about tone.

That suggests writers differed in filming from the original plan and the scene should have been cut. Regardless, this is a dark comedy/sci fi movie that I would argue is horrifying. It feels especially true in today’s social climate of trad wives crafting videos about an unrealistic homemaking lifestyle.

Conservatives urging repeal of the 19th Amendment and stronger female voting limits adds to the tension. Avoiding a real danger, the heart of the matter shows your partner is not a toy to change. Love them at your own risk and it might be worth it. This echoes the Stepford Wives motif.
