Mister D: Looking around on the internet, these names have come up, too: Annaleigh Ashford, Arianna Grande, Nathan Lane, and my, oh my, Adam Sandler. I have never seen the musical, so I’m not really sure who’s suited to play whichever character. But I know a lot of BetteHeads who love ‘Wicked’ and anything to do with theater. If you want, tell me about all these stars and what role they should play in the comments below
The winds have changed — again — for the long-awaited film version of the smash-hit musical ‘Wicked.’
Universal Pictures revealed on Friday that the film will land in US theatres on December 22, 2021 — two years after its original release date.
Director Stephen Daldry, of Billy Elliot fame, is still set to helm the film, with Marc Platt (La La Land, Alladin) producing.
Winnie Holzman and Oscar-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz are reteaming for the screenplay adaption.
Platt, Holzman and Schwartz all worked on the Broadway show which debuted on 30 October 2003, at the Gershwin Theatre, New York.
Based on a 1995 book by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is a reimagining of The Wizard of Oz told from the perspective of two witches — Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.
The original Broadway production — which starred Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda — went on to win three Tony Awards.
Universal had originally slated Wicked to open at the end of 2019 but decided instead to go with Cats, the big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash musical, instead.
Wicked‘s cast has yet to be announced however names like Lea Michele — who sang two songs from the musical while starring in Glee— along with Amanda Seyfried, Anna Kendrick, Bette Midler and Nicole Kidman have been bandied around.
There’s no word on an Australian release date but we will keep you posted.
