Sitting In Bars With Cake is a romantic movie on Prime Video which brings the much-loved blog and subsequent book by Audrey Shulman to life. It tells the story of a shy single woman who struggles to meet men and turns to baking for help. Headed up by Black-ish and Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi, the all-star movie also features Odessa A’zion and boasts fabulous guest appearances from Bette Midler, Ron Livingston, Maia Mitchell, and Aaron Dominguez. 

Sitting In Bars with Cake is a fun joyride through some of Los Angeles’ most wonderful watering holes, plus a celebration of baking, female friendship, and finding emotional fulfillment in the most unexpected places.

Sitting In Bars With Cake plot

Sitting In Bars With Cake is inspired by true events and follows a quiet young woman Jane (Yara Shahidi) who is unlucky in love. Then one day she takes a cake she baked for her best friend’s birthday into a bar and finds herself swarmed by men. She’s convinced it’s a fluke, but her friend Corinne (Odessa A’zion) talks her into spending a year baking and then taking the cakes into bars — also known as ‘cakebarring’ — in the hope that it will help her find true love and developing confidence. And soon it changes her life in ways she could never have imagined. During their year of ‘cakebarring’ Corinne receives a life-altering diagnosis, and the pair face a challenge, unlike anything they’ve experienced before.

Sitting In Bars With Cake cast — Yara Shahidi as Jane

The original book Sitting In Bars With Cake centers on author Audrey Shulman’s quest to find love by ‘cakebarring’ but Yara’s main character based on Audrey is called Jane in the movie. 

Yara Shahidi previously played Zoey Johnson in the series Grown-ish and Black-ish. She voiced Kendra in PAW Patrol: The Movie and Darci in Trollhunters. She will also play Tinker Bell in the Disney Plus upcoming movie Peter Pan & Wendy. Yara Shahidi as Jane in Sitting In Bars With Cake.

In Sitting In Bars With Cake, Odessa A’zion (Hellraiser) plays Jane’s friend Corinne who encourages her to do a year of ‘cakebarring’ to meet with Mr Right. 

Look out for legendary singer and actress Bette Midler (Beaches, Hocus Pocus, and The First Wives Club, who is guest starring although her role has not yet been announced. Ron Livingston (The Flash), Maia Mitchell (Good Trouble) and Aaron Dominguez (Only Murders in the Building) also appear, alongside Rish Shah (Ms. Marvel). Martha Kelly (Euphoria), Adina Porter (American Horror Story: Cult), Navid Negahban (The Old Man), Simone Recasner (The Big Leap), Will Ropp (The Fallout), and Charlie Morgan Patton (Jesus Revolution) round out the cast. The characters are currently under wraps at the moment.

Filming for Sitting In Bars With Cakes started in Los Angeles in October 2022. The movie is directed by Trish Sie, while the screenplay is by Audrey Shulman, who wrote the book. It’s produced by Susan Cartsonis, Brent Emery, Suzanne Farwell, and Nick Moceri, and executive produced by Yara Shahidi, Janet Knutsen, and Teri Simpson.
