You know, after all of these years telling jokes about “Elizabeth ‘The Tooth'” and “her hiney The Queen”…After jokes about the “haggard” queen’s “minor breed” dog taking a “major dump on her royal wedgies”…After jokes about the Queen’s lack of necessity for carrying a purse and the “royal hat fairies”…After all that, it made me so proud to see Bette Midler showing such meek class and elegance to Her Madge. It made me proud, but please don’t think that I expected any less.
I think one of the reasons that I most admire Bette Midler is that the majority of her career has been built out of crass jokes and brassy behavior, but when you strip the Miss M. persona away and are left with Mrs. Von Haselberg, you end up with this sweet little woman. We have all come to love and adore her because of her work as an entertainer, a conservationist and a philanthropist, but I also love her because there seems to be such a beautiful soul at the core of all of this work. Watching BETTE MIDLER (of all people) go “meek” is a beautiful thing, but it was almost like watching Mae West meet the Dalai Lama: On paper, it makes no sense. I loved every minute of it.
And KUDOS to Bette for introducing Jake Shimbabukuro to the rest of the world! Can you even imagine what a personal highlight this was for him? Bette AND the Queen? Well, it gives THIS queen’s heart pause. Personally, I saw this whole paring as a way for Bette to take one of the most socially and politically important moments of her career and then SHARE it with some talented individual who could benefit from it.
Class, kids. Pure class.
The woman is a legend; There’s no getting around it.
