'The Politician': What to expect from Ryan Murphy's new dark musical drama for Netflix?

There has never been so much puffery about a new Netflix series! People can’t stop talking about the wild anticipation behind ‘ The Politician’, the series that is to be aired on September 27th, 2019. The dark musical comedy that is written and directed by Ryan Murphy who is best known for the series ‘Glee’ and ‘American Horror Story’ features the life of Payton Hobart who is a wealthy student at Saint Sebastian High School in Santa Barbara, California. Payton is convinced that ever since he was a child he was destined to become the president of the United States. The show is about how he steers his journey to make his dreams a reality. Payton has to steer through the precarious political panorama of his high school while attempting to become the student body president at the same time making sure to keep his image and morality intact. He also succumbs to the disloyalty and non-support from his ruthless classmates. The series promises to be a dark sarcastic comedy offering a fascinating look at the misfortunes and ordeals that one goes through in order to become a politician. We all know and the obvious fact remains it’s not an easy or singular path to becoming a man of power.

Murphy’s ‘Glee’ made its mark on the television screens with its vibrant and colorful musically themed drama series. However, ‘The Politician’ should have its own advantages for the audience in its own unique way as it has been given a very vibrant and well-known cast. The cast includes Ben Platt who would be playing the lead role of Payton, the aspiring President of United States of America. Other well-known faces in the cast include Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Lange, Bette Midler, and Bohemian Rhapsody’s Lucy Boynton. The series has a different take to it as Murphy has quite realistically depicted the expectations of politics that people have in their minds. Knowing the kind of work Murphy usually puts forth, this Netflix series will set a mark and establish the director that he is. The sarcastic outlook he has chosen to take in showcasing how an individual can come into power with the hopes of ruling a superpower nation will definitely resonate with audiences all over the world.

Platt’s role in the movie “Pitch Perfect” had shown him to be someone who is shy and intimidated by others easily, but his sudden lead role as someone who wants to be the president in this series is a totally opposite character depiction. Platt fans will be bursting with anticipation and high expectations from the former treble maker. In fact, Platt believes that the series is something that will make viewers realize the value of self-identity and appreciation, in a world where everyone is so occupied in their own lifestyles and experiences that they forget to look at what they want from life and get stuck in a monotonous routine. This series will bring out a more relaxed and stress-free perception of being a politician with added curveballs that will make the plot of the election-esque series more gripping raising the standards of curiosity and suspense.

The show will also shed light on the concept of fake authenticity and the idea of authenticity especially with the new age of social media. Everybody has a way of portraying themselves to the world in order to fit in and be identified as important; the show identifies this new age crisis and makes you understand how important it really is to show your true self out to the world- your raw identity. Issues that also will be showcased on the series will be the idea of how people get what they want by being fake. The characters grapple with how much of themselves they want to let out honestly and how much of themselves they want to keep under covers just so that they can “fit in” and be identified as someone important. The main ideology behind the series has its crux in helping the youth understand that peer pressure and fitting in is not all that important and as a student in today’s fast-paced generation of media and technology being your self 100% can have its own benefits in the long run.
