Following a massive presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Netflix has officially dropped new details, stunning first-look images, and a global release date for its highly anticipated Cinderella reimagining, Steps.
It has been a huge week for Netflix Animation in France. If you’ve been following our live coverage, you’ll know we got an incredible sneak peek at this film yesterday. (In case you missed it, be sure to check out our full breakdown of everything we learned about Netflix’s landmark animated feature at the Annecy Film Festival, where the filmmakers discussed the movie’s “edible”, Y2K-inspired villains, and giant biker trolls).
Now, Netflix has officially pulled back the curtain even further, locking in a release date. You can officially mark your calendars for Friday, November 20, 2026.
This perfectly positions Steps as Netflix’s major family-friendly animated blockbuster for the 2026 Thanksgiving and holiday season—a release window the streamer has historically used for massive animated hits like Leo and The Sea Beast.
What is Steps about?
While we got a great taste of the plot during the Annecy panel, Netflix has finally provided us with the official synopsis, detailing exactly how Lilith manages to break the fairy tale:
“Think you know Cinderella’s “evil” stepsisters? Think again. Sick of living in Cinderella’s shadow, Lilith (Ali Wong) steals the Fairy Godmother’s (Bette Midler) magic wand and hijacks the Royal Ball with her sister Margot (Stephanie Hsu), breaking the Cinderella story as we know it and dooming the kingdom to the tyrannical rule of Priscilla (Nikki Glaser), a villainous schemer who swoops in and snatches the throne. Now, Lilith must team up with Cinderella (Amanda Seyfried) to fight biker trolls, outrun evil henchmen, and escape the Screaming Woods on an epic quest to save the kingdom, but most importantly, their relationship.”
Who is behind Steps?
Produced by Netflix Animation Studios (the first film to be completed end-to-end under the studio) and Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions, the film boasts a massive roster of comedic talent both in the vocal booth and behind the keyboard.
