ABOUT SHEPARD FAIREY

November 9, 2022For the Birds: The Birdsong Project—the new sweeping collection of 242 recordings by leading artists inspired by birdsong—continues to inspire artists and partners with its mission to celebrate birdsong and support the conservation of birds and their habitats. In collaboration with renowned street artist Shepard Fairey (creator of the iconic “Hope” portrait of President Obama), The Birdsong Project has announced an exclusive print. Only 450 limited-edition prints will be available for purchase.

“I’m concerned about the health of our planet, and I’m very aware that declining bird populations are an early indication of serious ecological problems on the horizon,” said Shepard Fairey. “I also love birds and don’t want to see Rachel Carson’s warning from “Silent Spring” of a future without birds come to pass. My print The Birdsong Project (Another Day In the Coal Mine) is a scene of sun, flowers, and a Summer Tanager, a beautiful red bird that was once extremely common but has seen a concerning decline in its population. My print is a vision of what we almost all find beautiful but can no longer take for granted. I don’t want this print to be a nostalgic picture of a romantic time that once was. Let’s protect the birds for our time and the planet’s future!”

The Birdsong Project has also announced the release of a new lyric video for the poem 136 Syllables at Rocky Mountain Dharma Center, originally written by Allen Ginsburg and read by author Larry “Ratso” Sloman, with music by Beach House. The video was created by filmmaker Max Joseph (Catfish, Nobody’s Fool), and features a collection of landscapes and shots of nature, including snow-covered mountaintops, waterfalls, and trees filled with birds. In 2008 Fairey took his design skills to support the Obama campaign. He created the famous “Hope” poster. The poster was not originally endorsed officially by the Obama campaign, but the image quickly became the face of the campaign. Fairey is a great example of a street artist who has had his fair share of trouble with the law but can use his art to reach millions while making a living for himself. In 2009, Fairey had his first museum exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, named after the book he released in 2006, “Supply and Demand.” It included most artwork today incorporated into Fairey’s popular clothing brand, Obey. Fairey created the Obey brand as an extension of his work, with clothing as another canvas to spread his messages. Shepard Fairey explains that the real meaning behind most of his artwork is to question everything. Despite Fairey’s quarrels in court and with other artists he remains one of the most popular and well-known street artists today.
