Her good friend Bette Midler was on hand as an emotional Yoko Ono launched an exhibition honouring her late husband.

The Japanese artist became tearful at the inauguration of John Lennon: The New City Years, admitting that his death 30 years ago still haunts her.

On display are artefacts like the Beatle’s famous New York City t-shirt, his upright piano, his posthumous 1981 Grammy Award and, hardest of all for Yoko, a paper bag containing his clothes from the night in 1980 when he was shot.

His widow said she’d included the items which she received from the coroner to show people the effects of gun violence.

The exhibition was, she said, “a small, big show, with a powerful wind blowing in it from the past. Like Manhattan itself”
