Broadway offered something for everyone last week, as long as everyone was loaded with dough. Face-value ducats topped out at $1,150 for blockbuster Hamilton, but that was Monopoly money considering the going rate for fans of Bette Midler (nearing the spectacular end of her spectacular run in Hello, Dolly!) and Bruce Springsteen (whose work week is limited to five performances at the 948-seat Walter Kerr). I just got back from New Orleans where I did a show with Gavin Creel. Let me first say: His voice is unbelievable—the tone, the musicality, perfect! Here’s my deconstruction of his amazing vibrato:

He’s about to play Cornelius in Hello Dolly! He said they recently did a two-week meeting and Bette Midler is such an incredibly hard worker. When she started singing the title song, Gavin said you know that voice so well and you feel like you’re hearing an old friend. When she got to the lyric “Wow, wow, wow, fellas! Look at the all girl now, fellas!” everyone in the room had tears in their eyes. P.S. No matter what the song, Gavin sounds phenomenal. Read More

Hello Dolly’s writer, Jerry Herman, On Bette Midler:

Hello Dolly’s writer, Jerry Herman, On Bette Midler:”Many times through the years I’ve been asked about bringing back Hello, Dolly! and it has always been,˜Who would be my dream Dolly?’ and though I’ve had literally dozens of names tossed at me, I knew that we needed more than just a wonderful singer or a wonderful actor, so I held on to the hope that she would also be a distinctly original persona. Who is out there that has the necessary stature, warmth, the incredible talent and ability, and especially the singular, outsized personality that I was looking for in a 21st Century Dolly? Only one person: Bette Midler. Only Bette could bring Dolly brilliantly back to the lights of 14th Street “? (2016) Read More

Bette Midler On Today’s Audiences:

Bette Midler On Today’s Audiences: “Audiences have lowered their expectations. Things have changed so that you don’t even have to sing in tune. It’s over. It’ll never be like it was. It’s the tenor of the times. Much of the mass audience is no longer knowlcdgable, has no dea what skills are required. And they don’t appreciate how much work it is.” (1994)
