How to avoid the crowds at these NYC hotspots

The hot mess: Insane crowds at “Hello, Dolly!” on Broadway are a sure Bette. That’s because its Tony Award-winning star, Bette Midler, is returning to the musical for just six weeks starting July 17. During her first stint, tickets went for as much as $800 and performances were always sold out — leading to hordes of people waiting for cancellation seats all day. “The Midler lines at the Shubert are always long and lively,” PR man Rick Miramontez tells The Post. Even wilder are the fans waiting to bask in the glow of the Divine Miss M post-show. “Bette at the stage door is one of the great Broadway events,” Miramontez says. Read More

They say what’s old is new again, but in this case, it’s also retooled, reimagined and racing with eyes toward Broadway — times two.

Iris Rainer Dart, author of “Beaches,” is hoping to bring a theatrical version of the novel to Broadway. She also has a Tony Award-nominated production, 2011’s “The People in the Picture,” now making its West Coast premiere in hopes of returning to the Great White Way. Read More

David Rooney: The Best New York Theater of 2017

The Hollywood Reporter
David Rooney: The Best New York Theater of 2017

Every major production of an August Wilson work is a stinging reminder of the loss of one of American drama’s most uniquely resonant voices. But this belated Broadway debut of the play that launched his magnificent 10-part chronicle of African-American experience in the 20th century — directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson with penetrating emotional depth and irrepressible humor — was something extraordinary. Gritty and lyrical, joyful and sorrowful, the play examines black struggle through the prism of a Pittsburgh gypsy-cab company in 1977, its denizens portrayed here by a peerless ensemble that found music in every note. Midler to Play All 8 Performances in Final Week; Pushes Up Donna Murphy’s Last Bow

NYTIX
Midler to Play All 8 Performances in Final Week; Pushes Up Donna Murphy’s Last Bow
POSTED ON DECEMBER 10, 2017 BY SANGRIT MALAY

Throughout the run, Donna Murphy has been Bette Midler’s replacement, playing all Tuesday evening performances since June 13, 2017, allowing Midler to play just 7 performances in a regular week, in addition to filling in for crucial weeks when Midler had to take a prolonged vacation. While the box office certainly took a hit in the Murphy weeks, most notable in the two-week stint from June 27, 2017 to July 9, 2017, Midler’s extravagant popularity more than made up for these lulls, and Murphy’s readiness to play glorified understudy was worth the necessity of enduring these volatile box office figures. Originally, it was announced that Murphy would play her final performance on January 9, 2018. However, to accommodate Midler’s whims and convictions, this has been changed. Murphy will now play her final performance on January 7, 2018, on which date there has been added a previously unscheduled evening performance at 7:30pm. In addition, the January 9, 2018 performance will be cancelled in light of the added January 14, 2018 Actors Fund benefit performance. As such, Midler will now play all eight performances in the final week of her run in Hello, Dolly! The show will then go dark for a week, and on January 20, 2018, Bernadette Peters will begin her run as Dolly Gallagher Levi as previously announced. Furthermore, on that date, Victor Garber will step in for David Hyde Pierce, who has been Midler’s loyal co-star since the beginning of the run. Read More

Bette Midler Comes Back, Bringing the Money With Her

New York Show Tickets
Bette Midler Comes Back, Bringing the Money With Her
POSTED ON NOVEMBER 16, 2017 BY JENNIFER R JONES

Bette Midler in Hello Dolly! It is almost comedic how powerful Bette Midler’s box office presence is in the currently running revival of Hello, Dolly! Last week, Donna Murphy stepped in for her for the whole week, and the box office took a plunge. This past week, Bette was back for her usual 7 performances (with Donna Murphy still playing the eighth on Tuesday evening), and the weekly gross was $2,352,792, which represents 128.6% of the show’s gross potential. This is an increase from last week of $1,473,423, when Donna Murphy was in the role. With a top ticket price of $748.00, the average paid admission was $210.26, and the audience was filled up to 96.7% of capacity. The excitement over seeing Bette in person is even greater than ever, as she is nearing the end of her run on January 14, 2018. At that point, Bernadette Peters will replace her, and David Hyde Pierce will also end his tenure, to be replaced by Victor Garber. With Bette Midler back in her part, Hello, Dolly! was the third highest performing show this past week, following only Hamilton, with a weekly gross of $3,143,107, and Springsteen on Broadway, with a weekly gross of $2,395,570. In terms of gross potential, however, Hello, Dolly! was at number one at 128.6%. Performing not quite as well was Dear Evan Hansen, which brought in a weekly gross of $1,680,818, or 122.0%, followed by Hamilton at 108.6% of its gross potential. Read More
