Bette Midler and husband Martin

“Behind every great man there’s a great woman” is a familiar expression, but what about great men behind great women? This may sound silly, but it seems to be the case for Bette Midler, whose marriage to Martin von Haselberg didn’t kill her career – it helped her talent thrive.

A guide to a successful marriage, Bette-Midler style

In 1984, Bette Midler was an accomplished singer and actress when she met her almost-colleague, Martin von Haselberg, who was probably less well-known than her. The two immediately felt that they belonged together and tied the knot about six weeks after their first meeting. Their daughter, actress Sophie von Haselberg, arrived on November 14, 1986. Michael Kors is what every young designer wants to grow up to be: a gajillionaire.

There, I’ve said it—but let me add that I don’t think there’s a single soul who would begrudge him a nickel of that. He made it the old-fashioned way—by working hard and using every ounce of his enormous talent, his intelligence, and his radiant good humor to lift him to the top of a business based on dreams and that most ephemeral of things: beauty.

It was many, many years ago that I first encountered Michael, on the island of Capri, at the sidewalk bar in front of the Grand Hotel Quisisana. (I mean, of course it would be Capri—doesn’t it make perfect sense? Just look at his ads! Everyone in them is either on their way there or just returning from a brief rendezvous—private jets, yachts, great clothes, and a little mischief.) There he was at a tiny outdoor table, wearing a turquoise linen shirt the color of his eyes and surrounded by a group of people clutching their sides with laughter. He left his table, bounded up to me and introduced himself, and I fell in love then and there. Read More

Bette Midler, Studio 60, Joey: Why These 3 Anticipated TV Shows Fell Flat

Last year, 487 scripted series aired on broadcast, cable and streaming outlets. This year, Netflix alone has cranked out about 700 original series.

Let that sink in for a second. Yeah, that’s a whole lot of content. And the fact that we consume so much content has had some interesting side effects.

Whether we realize it or not, average viewers are now astute dramaturges, who can sniff out weak storylines, disingenuous performances and poor social commentaries. So naturally, we get wildly disappointed when new shows don’t live up to our expectations. Read More

Mister D: And this my friends is how to handle a fucked up, too sensitive, and over-judgemental society. Especially when your intent was good, but nobody cared, It’s fun to attack people because you think that it puts you on the morally superior high ground. But the really intelligent people understand that you’ve more than likely been misjudged yourself at some point. What lesson are you going to bring to the table?

Jacob Burns Film Center's Annual Gala Honors Award Winning Producer Dori Berinstein - Bette Midler Was Unable To Make It

Broadway’s presence and reach extends beyond the Big Apple, including just outside New York City with the Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC)- one of the most successful suburban film houses in the country- and their programs that promote the theatre to new audiences.

At this year’s annual JBFC Gala last week, JBFC celebrated and honored two imagination builders of Broadway, including legendary Broadway Producer Dori Berinstein with the Vision Award and JBFC Board Member Robert Goldberg with the first ever David Swope Leadership Award (bios below). A long-time supporter of JBFC, Dori is the curator and moderator of JBFC’s ongoing series Life on the Stage (in partnership with the Actors Fund) and now JBFC’s newest board member. Read More

Betty Buckley: Hello, Dolly! National Tour is a “Gift”

Broadway legend Betty Buckley says she’s “so excited” to be a part of the first national tour of Hello, Dolly!

Buckley told Michael Riedel and Christine Nagy on “In the Wings” that it’s a “gift” to be able to take this show on the road.

Disney’s ‘Hocus Pocus’ Gets Giant Sanderson Sisters Plushies For Halloween
