Winnetka Park District ready for its 29th Annual Ice Show
The Winnetka Park District’s 29th Annual Ice Show opens Friday with participants skating to some of the sounds of today’s hottest divas. Highlights include skating routines to Cher, Aretha Franklin and Bette Midler.
Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, 6 p.m. on Saturday and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Winnetka Ice Arena, 490 Hibbard Road. Tickets are $6. For more information call (847) 501-2060.
The opening number includes 87 children skating to Janet Jackson’s music. This routine includes fast moving circles, unison dancing and kicks, all while the participants are dressed in red velvet with silver sequin “diva” outfits.
Some of the more experienced skaters will be skating to the music of Tina Turner. The routine includes difficult moves such as double jumps, fast spins, and advanced dance movements. Their diva outfits are black and silver lame.
Included in this year’s show are the four synchronized skating teams that represent the Winnetka Ice Arena. Ages 6-16, these four teams are considered the “Rockettes on ice.” Each team will skate to diverse sounds. The youngest-age team will skate to the overture from “Annie” and the next age group will skate to “The Brady Bunch Theme.” The next group, which won the Chicago Metropolitan District 8 Competition, will skate to an Irish dance musical tune, while the oldest age team will skate to a classical music mix.
The closing number includes 80 participants skating to Prince’s “Baby I’m a Star.” Their routine includes pinwheels, a conga line and some of today’s latest dance moves.
“It is exciting to see all the kids perform in front of such large audiences,” said Tom Gullen, superintendent of facilities for the Winnetka Park District. “There is such enthusiasm from everyone; we are really going to have a terrific show this year.”
