They are two of America’s favourite sweethearts.

So there is little doubt fellow attendees would have been thrilled to see Bette Midler team up with newsreader Katie Couric at a charity picnic in New York on Thursday.

The pair looked like they were having a great time at the legendary singer and actress’ New York Restoration Project fundraiser at Gracie Mansion.

Bette, 67, looked remarkably well preserved in a colourful red and blue silk blouse, white three-quarter length trousers and brown shoes.

Not to be outshone, the 56-year-old former Today host also looked in fine figure in a long red skirt and black top.
But they were far from the only big names turning out for the thrilling philanthropic event.

For Broadway legend Bernadette Peters, 65, also turned out, and flaunted her fabulous figure in a sheer black vest, cardigan and trousers.

Designer Michael Kors brought some flamboyant fun to proceedings with a cheeky black suit jacket and white trousers combo, and was joined by his intern turned husband Lance LePere.

Indie movie favourite Parker Posey also turned heads thanks to a eccentric baggy red dress.
Bette started the project after being shocked at what had happened to the city where her career was born when she returned in 1995.

She said: ‘People were throwing their garbage out the window, leaving their lunches on the ground — I was so upset I didn’t sleep for a week.

‘Finally, I realized I needed to actually do something — even if it meant picking up trash with my own two hands.’
