Laverne Cox, Abigail Breslin Join LGBT Young Adult Film ‘Freak Show’ With Bette Midler

The film is based on the James St. James LGBT young adult novel of the same.
Laverne Cox and Abigail Breslin have been cast in the LGBT young adult film Freak Show.
The project is an adaptation of a book of the same name written by former Club Kid James St. James, and follows the story of cross-dressing teenager Billy Bloom who, despite attending an ultra conservative high school filled with Bibles Belles and Football Heroes, makes the decision to run for homecoming queen.
Breslin will take on the role of Billy’s rival, Lynette, and Cox will play reporter Felicia Watts. Larry Pine, Bette Midler, AnnaSophia Robb and Ian Nelson also star, along with The Imitation Game actor Alex Lawther playing Billy.
Freak Show is currently filming in New York.
The Kids Are Alright helmer Celine Rattray will direct the project, which was adapted for the screen by Beth Rigazio and PJ Clifton. Trudie Styler will act as producer, along with Jeffrey Coulter, Charlotte Ubben, Celine Rattray and Bryan Rabin.
Maven Pictures is producing the movie with Drew Barrymore’s production banner, Flower Films. Barrymore will act as executive producer on the film.
Cox is known for her role on the Netflix show Orange is the New Black and can be seen in the upcoming rom-com Doubt.
Breslin was nominated for an Oscar for her role in the 2066 film Little Miss Sunshine. She currently is on Ryan Murphy’s FOX TV show Scream Queens.
Cox is repped by the Hartig Hilepo Agency and Peikoff & Mahan. Breslin is repped by CAA and Lichter & Grossman.
