Bette Midler as a scuzzy celebrity stalker? The Divine Miss M. intends to tackle exactly such a role.
She and her filmmaking partner Bonnie Bruckheimer have picked up movie rights to Iris Rainer Dart’s “Show Business Kills” novel – which isn’t due out until February – with Bette already laying claim to a character who will likely remind some of the unbalanced fan played by Kathy Bates in “Misery.”
Dart, whose “Beaches” book became one of Bette’s most successful movies, says, “Bette never goes for the easy choice.
She probably looked at all the characters in the book, and the actress in her had to say, ”˜This is the one with the most emotion.’ ”
