Bette Midler: “I never had a friendship that lasted that long. But I had a very dear friend when I was young. 1 was in the 10th grade when we met, and she’s the one who brought out whatever sense of humor I have. She was only 19 when she died. Since then I’ve had a good friend here and there, but nothing like that. You know, there’s a kind of emotional exploration you plumb with a friend that you don’t really do with your family. You don’t spill your guts, because you don’t want to worry them. Of course, in crisis times, nothing beats your family.” (Syracuse Herald, February 5, 1989)
