They’re political rivals.
Falchuk, whose wife Gwyneth Paltrow also stars in the series, developed the melodrama with his producing partner Ryan Murphy.
Midler glowed on set wearing a structured gunmetal silver jacquard trench coat, black cigarette pants, and slingback heels.
Her power-look was accessorized with black sunglasses, long black leather gloves, a black purse, and vibrant emerald earrings.
In the scene, Boynton’s character Astrid appeared to be tailing Midler as she stopped at a halal cart for lunch. When she is spotted, Midler tried to duck away from Boynton.
The characters are working for political rivals in the Democratic primary race for New York Senate.
At the end of season one, Astrid has dug up damning dirt on Midler’s boss.
Bette’s character in the series, Hadassah Gold, is the chief of staff of state senator Dede Standish played by Judith Light.
